Thanks for the welcome

[edit]

Hi CGorman and thanks for the welcome note. To be honest I'm unlikely to start an account here - I shouldn't really have been fiddling with stories at all, as I am an ex-Wikipedian doing cold turkey, and I really shouldn't get back into all this stuff, tempting though it is. But I just came to it as a news source, then one little click ... gah! I should probably go away now ... thanks and best wishes from a Grumpy Old Git. 82.45.245.15 22:17, 31 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, too

Check out my WP history , and save yourself from association with bad news , such as I present . But thanks for the welcome-Jimbo Wales must own this too -does he personally dis-invite others, do you suppose ? I say know thy history to save us repeating the folly , I say real people hurt . He says why should he care? I care because the googling requires responsibility. I don't see it , so there is no happiness in the welcome, only sadness . Thank you for the list at User:CGorman/Categories. It is very helpful. Do you mind if I edit it to include some of the lesser popular categories not listed, like Google for example. Bawolff 02:18, 24 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Issue of nonprofit news needs addressing, please

[edit]

Hello: I submitted an article just a while ago, and it was immediately deleted by Amgine. When I made contact by editing her user page, she replied that my article was a press release from my organization and did not represent a news item. I need help to understand why I, as a director of a nonprofit organization must somehow convince mainstream media to accept my press release and report it as news, and then have someone outside of Open Studios submit an article about our work? Our work is News! So, what to do? I need this issue addressed to my satisfaction, as well as others. Our nonprofit organization, no matter how big it gets, will never have a corporate marketing department that pays others to advertise our events and news. That's a total waste of money. Instead, we will utilize the internet to get the word out. You see, there are homeless people in this world, low-income families, villages in Third World countries that would like to learn about the work we do. It will give them hope, and, in most cases, it will be the kind of news that will provide them an opportunity to compete in a global market place. Here's the news article: Recording Studios Now Sit On Your Kitchen Table From Wikinews, the free news source you can write! Jump to: navigation, search

November 15, 2005

Up until just a few years ago, recording studios, whether for music or broadcasting or film making, required huge investments in equipment and facilities. Today, with the advent of the Digital Age, all one needs is a low-end PC, appropriate software, a microphone and digital camera. Open Studios has organized an approach to building and operating community based recording studios, that require no money out-of-pocket. This extremely low-cost approach makes it possible for low-income neighborhoods and villages to compete with international corporations by allowing users to create CDs, DVDs, tv and radio shows, public service announcements, even full-featured films.

Tom Poe, who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Open Studios, says, "We use low-end PCs and Free or Open Source Software (FOSS) from Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, for a couple of reasons. First, it's free. There are no license fees. Second, the software will always be state-of-the-art, and allows users to progress from beginner to expert, without having to move away from the applications they learned." This approach has taken advantage of the Open Source movement, in that the users that become experts in the applications they use, tend to become contributors to improving those applications.

So often, even today, "we expect entertainment centers to be providing entertainment for us to watch or listen to, when, in reality, they can be used to create entertainment.", Poe said. He cited examples of people who like to take movies while they travel to new places. Those movies can now be edited on a computer, and graphics can be added, such as a title, credits, insertion of photos, text, all combining to create a tv show or film. A child can sit in front of one of these computers, and play a tune on her Kazoo. She then can bring up Rosegarden4, click and hear her tune played back to her. She can click and bring up her music displayed as a score sheet, edit the notes and change her tune. She can click, select an instrument, and her tune sounds like a piano, or trumpet. She can add tracks, and soon, an entire orchestra is playing her tune. "The best part, is the computer being able to let anyone participate, and not have to be restricted to an expensive recording studio facility. Just use your kitchen table.", said Poe.

It's nice to know that the day is coming, when every community will have such computers available for the residents. Culture is a community proposition, and certainly, with recording studios, our world community will benefit. Open Studios invites everyone to stop by and learn more about how your community can participate. [edit]

Imitation gun pointed at Australia swimmers during training

[edit]

CGorman, I've noticed that the article you started, Imitation gun pointed at Australia swimmers during training, has been tagged with a {{Copyvio}}. I've noticed that this is a complete copy of the Swim-sites.com article, which is listed only as a source. Now, as a longtime member, I thought I'd ask you to sort it out (because I know you wouldn't submit a copyvio on purpose). Thanks. --MrMiscellanious (talk) (contribs) 01:59, 18 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Creative Commons License

[edit]

Regarding your articles published on swim-sites.com, the Creative Commons Attribution license requires "For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work." In other words, your work on your other site is not eligible for inclusion here verbatim unless you first license your material as such. This is not an issue of you being the creator, it's an issue that your work is by default copyrighted unless you specify otherwise on its original publication. Now, if you published here first, and then attributed the work on your site to your work for Wikinews, I think you'd be okay.

I'm not targeting you because I don't like you; quite the contrary, I appreciate the welcome. However, if you ever became fed up with Wikinews (which doesn't seem implausible with a few long time members), WN would be caught with its pants down because, despite your good intentions, WN would be publishing copyrighted content under an invalid license. I've been working with Open Source software for a while, and this happens all the time. An author who creates source code under one license (in this case, the default copyright license of any published material), cannot contribute her source to projects that have a conflicting license.

In summary, it's not enough to say that you republish your work on Wikinews. You need to either explicitly say that your work is Public Domain, or you need to explicitly say that your work is licensed under a compatible license. ironiridis 21:06, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

This is a message to inform you that I have added every administrator to the Rfda section on WN:A. This is not personal and I feel as if the community, who did not have the option of voting for or against most of the administrators, should be able to choose who they want to be in charge. I also want to say that I value everyones work on this site and I know that everyone does their best. I hope that none of you will take this personally and I hope that all of us will continue to work together. Jason Safoutin 12:09, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Debatepedia.org launch press release - "the Wikipedia of debate"

[edit]

Thought you might be interested in this as a Wikinews reporter.

For Immediate Release The International Debate Education Association Launches Debatepedia.org

Debatepedia calls on citizens to take a stand as
editors on the “Wikipedia of debate”

Main Page: http://wiki.idebate.org/index.php/Welcome_to_Debatepedia!

NEW YORK, NY (October 12, 2007) – The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) announced today its launch of Debatepedia.org, a wiki with the ambitious mission of becoming the world’s "Wikipedia of debate and reason". On Debatepedia, at www.idebate.org, people can help edit and co-create an encyclopedia of debates by adding pro and con arguments and compiling bodies of supporting evidence within a unique pro/con “logic tree” structure. Debatepedia is also a place for documenting the positions of leaders and organizations. The potential range of debates on Debatepedia is limitless and includes topics that are international, national, and local in scope. It also intends to offer different language versions. Its ambitious mission will have a major impact on the way citizens engage in pressing debates, draw personal conclusions, and even influence their representatives and leaders.

Debatepedia is the product of over a year-and-a-half of work by a dedicated team of individuals. It was founded by Georgetown students and alumni in the Winter of 2006, who then outsourced a software project to India in the Spring and Summer of 2007, creating software that enables users to easily use and manipulate the original and essential “logic-tree” pro/con structure of debates. Debatepedia merged with IDEA in the summer of 2007, joining a talented international team, and benefiting from the migration of roughly 500 refined debate articles from IDEA’s existing Debatabase (the product of over 8 years of work). The merger of these teams under the umbrella of IDEA and its network has made the new Debatepedia into a powerful force of effort, vision, and potential.

With Debatepedia’s launch, the focus moves to building a vibrant wiki community of volunteer editors. Like Wikipedia, such a community is fundamental to its mission. Debatepedia’s launch is a call to debaters, students, experts, and citizens to register on Debatepedia and become active editors and members of its community. It encourages editors to engage for personal reasons in the issues they care most about, using Debatepedia as a tool to gather and weigh pros and cons, and back up the positions they take. For debaters, its the ultimate forum for gathering and depositing evidence.

Debatepedia founder and chief editor Brooks Lindsay says, “I am incredibly lucky to be the chief editor of Debatepedia because the process and structure pushes me to read widely on the most important issues of the day, inquire in areas of uncertainty, gather and organize arguments, deliberate on them, and determine where I stand. It’s the ultimate personal philosophical tool, and a great tool for debaters.”

In the coming year, Debatepedia’s focus is squarely on the hottest debates in the world today. For those living in or interested in the United States, it will be featuring roughly 50 essential debates that surround the 2008 US presidential and congressional elections.
