All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours. Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. Places to go, people to meet Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Write your first article for Wikinews! Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it! It is recommended you read the article guide before starting. Also make sure to check the list of recently created articles to see if your story hasn't already been reported upon.

You write as normal. And as longs as [[category:C628 (WWC2010)]] and [[category:Writing contest 2010]] are added the reviewing JavaScript gadget will automatically add you points to the log. See this I'm sure the article you wrote today could be added as points. No restrictions.

EPR glitch

Article Four dead after US helicopter crashes in Afghanistan wasn't sighted by EPR. That's a glitch that happens every once in a while; it's a good idea to always double-check after passing an article that EPR actually sighted it. An article doesn't show on the main page until it's in Category:Published and it's sighted, so until recently these articles disappeared into limbo and were only discovered months later. Recently there's a section in the Newsroom for Articles improperly published, which is how I noticed this one.

Oh. Sorry, poor description on my part; no, the category is added by the {{publish}} template. In the scenario I was describing, everything like that got done right except that the article didn't get sighted. Hm. After publishing, look at the article history (not the talk page history), and the published revision should have [sighted] after it. If it doesn't, view the article page itself — the {{review}} tag should be gone — and go to the bottom of the page. There should be a "share this" box of icons, which is the visible form of the {{publish}} tag. Assuming all that looks right, find the "Review this revision" box and click submit.

BTW, is it intention on your part that the sections of your talk page don't have edit buttons, or is that an unintended side-effect of something-or-other? --Pi zero (talk) 12:18, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Side note, that article wasn't added to the contest's article log either, I had to insert it manually. Might be something to contact Bawolff (talk · contribs) about, i've seen this recur several times now. Tempodivalse [talk] 13:35, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Okay, I think I get that...I'll probably just try to avoid reviewing articles with Chrome and use Opera instead. I left a note at Bawolff's talk page, so he should get that at some point. It's actually not my intention at all to have no edit buttons, I don't know why that happens, but I'm not that bothered by it, so I haven't taken the trouble to try and fix it. Thanks for reviewing and publishing the article, my first! The bit about it being "full of patrons" was sourced to http://blogs.pe.com/news/digest/2010/06/update-shooter-was-father-gran.html where the witness said "I saw two employees run out of the employee door and then I saw 8 or 10 people run out of the restaurant and across the street", but, meh. Sorry about the "breaking" thing. It wasn't meant to push it through a review ahead of other articles in the queue, just that at the moment the two who are still alive are in hospital in surgery. Oh, no problem. The bit I couldn't find was that the family was specifically targeted; it was sort of implied in the sources, but I couldn't find anything where it specifically said that, so I didn't feel real happy about leaving it in...but yeah...no big deal, I think. And don't worry about the breaking thing; I don't like the template in any case, so I'm sort of biased against it in the first place. IMO, it's sort of misleading as it's very rare anyone ever bothers to update the breaking news articles, so saying "please refresh often for updates" or whatever is sort of silly. If I recall correctly, it was added with New York Times source, but I didn't find the quote or anything there. My assumption was that the source had been changed in the day the article had been waiting for review, and the parts that backed that up had been removed. I reworded it, it was bit out of context and jumbled together, but I don't see a problem with quoting the person; my impression that since they've publicly spoken about it, there isn't anything wrong with using that quote.
