The duty of the convention chair is to manage the various departments of the convention committee (or concom). Depending on the convention, their responsibilities can also include acting as hotel liaison, guest liaison, public relations liaison, or just "the person who catches stuff that falls through the cracks." They are often assisted by a vice-chair.

In the cases where the convention is organized as a non-profit corporation, the chair typically has authority over decisions made during the convention year - including picking the committee and proposing a budget - as opposed to the organization's board of directors who usually handle decisions made over multiple years (such as hotel contracts), as well as picking the chair.

While in some notable cases (such as Anthrocon or Mephit Furmeet) the convention chair provides the public face of the convention, more often the chair works behind the scenes in relative obscurity.
