Subtribe Sanguisorbineae
[edit | edit source]Subtribe Sanguisorbineae[1] (collectively known as burnets) in New York contains the three genera Poteridium, Poterium, and Sanguisorba, which have often been grouped together within Sanguisorba. The Flora of North America and New York Flora Atlas currently treat them as three separate genera, each of which have a single known species growing wild in New York.
|
Sanguisorba
[edit | edit source]Sanguisorba is commonly known as burnet. The North American species of this genus are Sanguisorba canadensis, S. menziesii, S. officinalis, and S. stipulata. Of these, only Sanguisorba canadensis is known to be native to New York State.
Sanguisorba officinalis, a native of western North America and Eurasia, is present in parts of the northeast and cultivated in New York. But plants of this species growing outside of cultivation in the northeast are thought to be introductions from Eurasia, not western North America.[1] |

Poteridium
[edit | edit source]There are two closely-related North American native Poteridium species: Poteridium annuum (prairie burnet) and Poteridium occidentale (western burnet). P. occidentale appears to be limited to western North America, and P. annuum is mainly found in the south-central U.S.[1] Of these, only a few specimens of P. annuum have been listed in the New York Flora Atlas.

Rosa sect. Synstylae
[edit | edit source]According the the Flora of North America, Rosa setigera (climbing prairie rose) has been introduced to the eastern United States from the Midwest. Some states, including New York, probably have both native and introduced populations.[1]
The highly-invasive multiflora rose is common in all but the coldest parts of the state. |
