Latvian
editEtymology
editFrom zinā(t) (“to know”) -tne. A 19th-century neologism coined by Atis Kronvalds in 1868 as ziņote, and later on (1873) changed to its modern form. It competed with J. Alunāns' zinātnība, which enjoyed some popularity in the 1870s, and which was later (1878) officially changed to zinība by a commission of the Riga Latvian society. Only at the beginning of the 20th century did Kronvalds' zinātne become the accepted standard form.[1]
