From Middle Dutch truerich, from Middle High German trūrec, from Old High German trūreg, trūrag, from Proto-Germanic *dreuzagaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrews- (to break, break off, crumble). Equivalent to treuren (to grieve)-ig (-y).

Cognate with Low German trurig, German traurig, English dreary.
