trencar
Catalan
editEtymology
editInherited from Old Catalan trencar, itself possibly from a Vulgar Latin *trinicāre (“cut into three parts”), from the root trini, based on duplicāre, or alternatively from an alteration of Latin truncāre. It may also derive from or be influenced by a pre-Roman, possibly Gaulish word, cf. *trincare (“cut the head”), or a base *trenko. Compare Occitan trencar, French trancher, Old French trenchier, Galician trincar, Portuguese trincar and Italian troncare. Native doublet of trinxar.
