From Proto-Balto-Slavic *pírˀmas, from Proto-Indo-European *preh₂- (before, in front), ultimately from *per- (before).[1]

Cognate with Old English fyrest (English first); Latin primus, Ancient Greek πρῶτος (prôtos) (Modern Greek πρώτος (prótos)).
