Etymology

edit

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pečarka (agaric, mushroom consumed roasted or dried (West Slavic dialectal form)), from Proto-Slavic *pečara-ka (diminutive suffix), which is a phonetic variant of Proto-Slavic *pečěra, being a verbal derivative of *pek- (to bake, to roast)*-ěra. The motivation is the typical form of preparation as food.[1][2] Compare cognates formed by synonymic suffixes, e.g. Russian печери́ца (pečeríca) and Serbo-Croatian pèčūrka, from Proto-Slavic *pečura.
