editInherited from Ottoman Turkish اوجاق (ocak), originally from Proto-Turkic *ōtčak (“hearth”). The sense January is a calque of Arabic كانون (literally “hearth”) (hence Turkish kânun), the name of two months in Rumi calendar. Cognate to Turkmen ojak, Azerbaijani ocaq, &c.
