From Proto-Cariban *môkɨ (animate singular distal demonstrative pronoun) *rô (emphatic particle). Compare Apalaí mokyro, Trió mëhro, Wayana mokëlë, Waiwai mïkro, Akawaio mïkörö, Macushi mîkîrî, Pemon mö'rö, Ye'kwana mö'dö. The first element is equivalent to the distal demonstrative moky, mòky.
