From Proto-Finnic *laita (edge, border) (compare Estonian laid, Ingrian laita, Karelian laita, Veps laid, Votic laitõ). Probably related to *laita (route, way) (which could rather be the direct origin of the sense "state of affairs"), in which case borrowed from Proto-Germanic *laidō.
