Etymology

From Turkish [Term?], composed of Kefe (“Caffa, a city in Crimea”) kil (“clay”). The material was imported from that region of Crimea.

Alternatively, according to Webster (1913), from Persian کف (kaf, “foam”) گل (gel, “clay”). Note that Turkish kil is from Persian گل (gel).
