editFrom Middle Vietnamese kêu, from Proto-Vietic *keːw (“to call”), a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 叫 (“to call; to cry; to shout”, SV: khiếu). Akin to Proto-Pearic *keːv.
