From Old Norse kjarr (copsewood, underbrush, bushes, scrub), from Proto-Germanic *kerzą, *kerzuz (scrub, bushes), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵers- (to turn, bend, twist).

Cognate with Danish kær (brushwood, undergrowth, scrub), Norwegian Bokmål kjerr, Norwegian Nynorsk kjørr (thicket), Icelandic kjarr (scrub).
