Usage notes
editUsually this prefix for "× 10²" is intentionally not used in scientific contexts, in favor of either "× 10¹" or "× 10³" instead. For example, "1 hm" (one hectometre) will usually be written instead as either "100 m" or "0.1 km". This fact is directly related to the preference for engineering notation as a subset of scientific notation that is especially useful mathematically. It favors groups of cubes (× 10³).
