Etymology

edit

Variant of gelongen (well done, felicitous), participle of geléngen; influenced phonetically by German gelungen, which also has a regional or informal sense “odd in a funny way”. At first said of funny coincidences, events, stories, ideas; then generalised. In Luxembourgish perhaps also associated with gelunn (regionally also gelugen), past participle of léien (to tell lies), and hence the more negative sense.
