Probably a back-formation from eudicots, short for eudicotyledons, from the New Latin coinage eudicotylēdōn, from the Ancient Greek components εὐ- (eu-, good, well)δι- (di-, two)κοτυληδών (kotulēdṓn, cup-shaped cavity); equivalent to eu- (true)dicot.
