editHas been compared with Lithuanian dúoba (“hollow, barn”), Lithuanian dóbti (“to smash, to hit”), Latvian dâbt (“to beat, to strike”).
Possibly related to Proto-Slavic *děbati (“to beat, to knock; to seek advantage”) (whence dialectal Czech debati, Russian дябать (djabatʹ), Bulgarian дябам (djabam)).
