Etymology

Possibly from Latin catēna (“chain”), referring to the arrangement of the sea buckthorn berries along the branches (and therefore a doublet of the borrowing catenă), or possibly from an alteration of Late Latin catanum, catanus. Cf. also Aromanian cãtinã (“spine, backbone”), which developed a different meaning.
