editInherited from Ottoman Turkish بللی (belli, “known, perceptible, certain”), from Proto-Turkic *bẹlgülig (“manifest”), from Proto-Turkic *bẹlgü (“sign”), a derivation of Proto-Turkic *bẹl- (“to denote, to designate”).[1] Cognate with Azerbaijani bəlli, Chuvash паллӑ (pallă, “sign, label, mark, estimate”), Yakut бэлиэ (belie, “sign, symbol”), and Karakhanid بَلْكُلُكْ (belgülüg, “manifest”).
