Speaking to, or speaking with
editThis article does not list a good example of using prepositions with "speaking". I was speaking to her. OR I was speaking with her. What's correct?
- They are usually both correct, and equivalent. However, if you're speaking "with" her, she is replying. If "to" her, she might be silent. Equinox ◑ 15:21, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
On the phone: "Is that X?" "Speaking."
editI wonder whether this very conventional form deserves a mention. Equinox ◑ 22:30, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
- @Equinox: [intransitive] to talk to somebody about something; to have a conversation with somebody ‘Can I speak to Susan?’ ‘Speaking.’ (= at the beginning of a phone conversation) --Backinstadiums (talk) 10:15, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
