Talk:heatresistant

It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.
I created this entry, which, however, is a very rare misspelling of heat-resistant or heat resistant. I could find only 5 quotations out of all results on newspapers.com via Google; the 1944 quotation also uses heat resistant in the previous sentence; two quotations (1958 and 1973) are by the same author; the 1964 quotation (“waterproof, heatresistant and scratch-proof”) evidently is missing a hyphen. Google Ngrams is not reliable, as it includes heat-resistant when it is hyphenated as a line break and incorrect OCR, which are the only results I found when searching on Google Books. - Delete, rare misspelling, but @J3133, do you maintain your keep for heat-resistant above? PUC – 10:12, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

- This is why we have criteria for inclusion. If the entry passes, why pretend the matter is subjective? We become more prescriptive when less objective. Inherently, "misspelling" is as prescriptive as it gets, and it's no coincidence that there are no clear guidelines for what constitutes a correct, or not, spelling. But never have I seen deliberate omission of a hyphen or space counted as misspelling here. Characterizing it as such is a great way to pretend that we don't already have rules for this. Keep, obviously. Well, maybe not obviously. It seems there may not be 3 solid citations. Only one of 1958 and 1973 will count, I'd tentatively strike the 1944, and please eliminate any that are OCR errors. DAVilla 03:44, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- We would be doing readers a great disservice if we were in any way to give the impression that it is OK to write "heat-resistant" as "heatresistant". Mihia (talk) 21:59, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
- Agreed, eventho what's "OK" or not is subjective. So yes, tag it rare or proscribed. DAVilla 11:41, 25 September 2021 (UTC)
