Ok. I'll remove the tag. When I added the tag, the entry did not specify which sense of "quill" was meant. Now fixed by someone, thanks. Hekaheka (my phone does not allow me to sign properly)
"Widespread use" is usually invoked in cases where a term was in general use, but possibly just "regionally", eg, North America. I don't see why it couldn't be invoked for widespread use in a special field, but I don't think a precedent to that effect has been established. In any event, it wasn't hard to find three cites.
