brôt

edit

In 18th century British English, before the cheap Penny Post and while paper was taxed, the combination ough was occasionally shortened to ô when the gh was not pronounced, to save space: thô for though, thorô for thorough, and brôt for brought.

Secondly, what is (or was) the pronunciation of brôt? The same as thô? --Backinstadiums (talk) 17:06, 30 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

bring oneself into favour

ingratiate is definited as "bring oneself into favour"; what meaning of bring is used here? --Backinstadiums (talk) 20:13, 19 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Similarly, bring into play. Backinstadiums (talk) 10:17, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
