editFrom Middle High German and Old High German sturm (“storm”). The retention of the u vowel is irregular; it was lowered to o due to a-mutation in all other West Germanic languages and even Old Norse, despite German being the one Germanic language where a-mutation most consistently occurred, especially of u to o.
