editFrom Proto-Malayo-Chamic *kakay. Compare Proto-Chamic *kakay (“foot”).
According to Thurgood (1999), perhaps from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qaqay with unexpected *q > *k sound change. The expected reflex of PMP *q is *h, not *k.
