Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂lewpéh₂-ḱo-s (fox-like), from *h₂lewpéh₂-s ~ *h₂lewph₂-és (fox) *-ḱos, from *h₂lewp- (fox). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx), Proto-Italic *wolpis, Lithuanian lãpė, Latvian lapsa, Old Armenian աղուէս (ałuēs), Luwian [script needed] (ulipna-), [script needed] (walipna-).
