editFirst attested as bruheze in 1300. Compound of Middle Dutch bru (“slop, sludge, mud”) and hees (“brushwood”). The toponym was later reinterpreted as brouwhuis (“brewery”). Compare Breudijk and Bruinisse. Formerly an independent village.
