Etymology

edit

Based on reanalysis of the verbs внять (vnjatʹ) and снять (snjatʹ) as composed of в- (v-) and с- (s-) plus a suffix -нять. Originally -ять (jatʹ) (cf. ять (jatʹ), взять (vzjatʹ), объя́ть (obʺjátʹ), прия́ть (prijátʹ)), from Proto-Slavic *ęti (to take) (present tense *jьmǫ). See also иметь (imetʹ). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic имѫ (imǫ), Lithuanian im̃ti, Latvian jem̃t (dialectal), Old Prussian īmt, Latin emō (to buy (to take in derived verbs)); from Proto-Indo-European *h₁em-. See also -нима́ть (-nimátʹ).
