---|---|---|
Shang | Shuowen Jiezi (compiled in Han) | Liushutong (compiled in Ming) |
Oracle bone script | Small seal script | Transcribed ancient scripts |
This character 暴 itself originates from (original form of 曝), an ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 日 (“sun”) 共 (“hands lifting something”) – to expose to the sun. 米 (“rice”) was later added to emphasize the meaning of drying things out in the sun.
The sense of "violence" was represented by 𫻺 in oracle bone script; ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 虎 (“tiger”) 戈 (“weapon”). However, by the time of bamboo slip script, usage of 𫻺 had been replaced entirely by phonetically borrowing 暴.
