editFrom Middle Chinese 處女 (MC tsyhoX|tsyhoH nrjoX|nrjoH). /syodyo/ > /syozyo/.
Originally referred in Japanese to a woman in a house ([家に]処る女 ie ni iru onna), more specifically to an unmarried woman.
