From Pali bhaya (fear; fright) or Sanskrit भय (bhaya, idem); possibly via Angkorian Old Khmer bhay (idem) or Old Khmer bhaya, bhai, bhaiya, bhaiyya (idem). Cognate with Modern Khmer ភ័យ (phɨy), Lao ໄພ (phai), Burmese ဘေး (bhe:).
