Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dádaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dádaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *dédeh₃ti. Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬛𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (dadāiti), Old Persian 𐎭𐎭𐎠𐎬𐎢𐎺 (d-d-a-tu-u-v /dadātuv/), Proto-Slavic *dati, Lithuanian duoti, Ancient Greek δίδωμι (dídōmi), Oscan 𐌃𐌄𐌃𐌄𐌃 (deded), Latin . The "wish to place" sense are from a conflation with दधाति (dadhāti) in PIE, see Latin -dō.
