  • (Delhi) IPA(key): /ɑː.mən.t̪ɾəɳ/, [äː.mɐ̃n̪.t̪ɾɐ̃ɳ]

Noun

आमंत्रण (āmantraṇm

  1. invitation (to a formal event)
    Synonyms: निमंत्रण (nimantraṇ), न्योता (nyotā)

Usage notes

edit

While आमंत्रण (āmantraṇ) and निमंत्रण (nimantraṇ) both roughly correspond to "invitation", they do not denote the same kind of event. An आमंत्रण (āmantraṇ) is more formal (e.g. a talk or meeting), has fixed reasons for being sent, and usually does not involve a shared meal with the guests. However, the two words are often confused and निमंत्रण (nimantraṇ) tends to have the broader meaning.
