Etymology
editFrom Middle Persian gys (gēs, “curl, locks”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *káyćas ~ *gáyćas, of unknown source, likely a borrowing from the the BMAC substrate. Compare Manichaean Middle Persian gyswg (gēsūg). Akin to Old Armenian գէս (gēs), an Iranian borrowing. Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬉𐬯𐬎 (gaēsu, “curls”), Sanskrit केश (keśa).
