editInherited from Old East Slavic сего дьне (sego dĭne), from Proto-Slavic *se dьne / *sego dьne, from *sego, genitive of *sь (“this”) *dьnь (“day”). Synchronically analyzable as a univerbation of сего́ (sevó) дня́ (dnjá).
Cognate with Belarusian сёння (sjónnja) and Ukrainian сього́дні (sʹohódni).
