editInherited from Ottoman Turkish ایشق (ışık, “light”),[1] from Proto-Turkic *yạĺčuk (“light, sun”), from *yạĺču- (“to shine on”),[2] equivalent to ışı- -k.
Cognate with Azerbaijani işıq (“light”), Turkmen yşyk (“light”).
