Overview

edit

The project coordinators are responsible for maintaining the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. They are the designated points of contact for procedural issues and are responsible for ensuring that the project as a whole is properly informed of them.

To provide some examples of coordinator duties: the coordinators manage the proposal and creation of new task forces; ensure that project announcement and task lists are kept up-to-date; initiate drafting of guidelines needed by the project; organize the category system; oversee the recruitment of new members, including the use of project notices and other advertising methods; create and maintain collaborative projects if any; maintain the project page and the various guidelines in it in a clean and easy-to-use state; wear the juice; monitor technical policies and ensure that project templates satisfy them; and assist in organizing and promoting any Backlog Elimination Drives.

They are also expected to generally assist project members with any questions or concerns.

The coordinator positions do not entail any executive power.

Positions

edit
  • Lead Coordinator (one open position): will have overall responsibility for procedural and administrative matters within the project.
  • Coordinator (2–4 open positions): will assist the Lead Coordinator by focusing on specific areas within the project that require special attention. These areas will be selected based on need and interest among the coordinators.

Election process

edit
  • The election process will run for two weeks from December 16, 00:01 UTC until December 31, 23:59 UTC.
  • Any member of the project may nominate themselves for either position by creating a new section under Nominations below and copying the sample form below. Nominees only interested in one position should indicate this when adding their names. Candidates need not make extensive statements if they do not wish to do so.
  • The elections will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support each nominee for either position. If the nominee is running for both positions and you wish to support them for only one, please make a note to that effect as part of your vote.
  • Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or to make general comments.

I am not the best person for this job though I hope to be capable enough to take on some of the maintenance tasks and free up the more-talented copy editors to do actual copy-editing work. To me, this seems a more-efficient application of relative talents. I've tried to help out a bit now and then to prepare myself for this position and applied what I've learned here to a 10,000 Challenge that was in need of upkeep. I'd also like to pay forward all the great help I've received here. However... I currently only have Internet access about three days a week so I may not be able to respond to matters in a timely fashion. Hopefully that will be resolved before the new year. Hopefully. I generally edit via dial-up connection which limits some of what I can do.
If this is not the right time for me to be a Coordinator, I'll still try to help out as a general dogsbody.

I am interested in continuing as an assistant coordinator in the GOCE project. I do as much editing of articles at the requests page as I can. I haven't yet become involved in blitzes and drives, but I will try to do that. I particularly enjoy the challenge of putting articles written by non-native speakers of English into Standard English, and of polishing fairly well written articles and getting them up to GA and FA standards. I'm willing to help new editors learn about Wikipedia's style and how Wikipedia works. I'm also willing to pitch in and help with whatever tasks need doing at GOCE.

Tdslk (talk · contribs) • Interested in Coordinator position only.

I've been active in the Guild since 2010, and a Coordinator since 2016. This is my main activity on Wikipedia, and I am happy to continue doing the work of a Coordinator to help keep things running smoothly. In a sense I am the opposite of Corinne, in that I mostly work on drives and blitzes, but I do occasionally take an article from the Requests page. I was excited to see the backlog dip below 1,000 articles at the end of the latest drive, although I acknowledge that it is an arbitrary milestone. As I said during the last elections, our real task is to improve Wikipedia by reducing the number of articles that need copy editing, not just to reduce the number of articles tagged for copy editing. If the backlog continues to drop, we may want to think about how to find articles that need a tag, but don't have one. For example, we could start reviewing articles with the generic "clean-up" tag to see whether they could more properly be tagged as needing copy editing.

This is a "yeah, well, whatever" self-nom; I'm delighted that Jonesey is returning as lead coordinator, Corinne and Tdslk are returning as fellow coordinators and Reidgreg is joining us. Many hands make light work, and I don't want too many other obligations to cut into my copyediting time. I discovered the GOCE shortly after becoming an active editor in late 2010, and it's a most effective way for me (and us) to improve the encyclopedia.

Jonesey95 (talk · contribs) • Interested in Lead Coordinator position if you'll have me again.

I plan to keep on running blitzes and drives and doing a lot of the administrative housekeeping, making sure that the i's are crossed and the t's are dotted [sic]. We are at an all-time low in the backlog, which is wonderful, and I don't think our copy-editing quality has suffered (i.e. it has never been professional-grade, but we consistently improve articles and don't seem to attract bad actors for very long). I expect that we will need some fresh blood in the lead position soon, and any time someone is willing to take over, I'm happy to step aside. Until then, I'm happy to keep on doing what seems to be working.

We haven't gotten a newsletter out in a long time; if someone wants to take on that work, I would be grateful.

  3. Jonesey does so much in terms of housekeeping that I sometimes wonder what's left to do. Hasn't missed a blitz or drive in at least two years (and I suspect much longer). Reidgreg (talk) 23:07, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
