Re May GOCE drive - Article word counts

Hi Phil

Re this. Please check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/FAQ (look at the last question in the "Page size" question). To quote:

Q: If I use the word counter on articles using bullets such as a list (or tables), not all words are counted. What do I do?

A: Just copy and paste the words (minus the Table of Contents, and any references or notes sections) into any word processor that can do a word count, and take the number from there.

For example, using the prosesize tool the World Series Cricket Results article counts in at just 223 words before the copyedit (which is what you're meant to count, not the 720 words from a post-copyedit count that you've done; I did a fair bit of work adding in an introduction and context for which the article had also been tagged, thus the increase in words). Hmmm, five hours work (check the page history) for 223 words? You've gotta be joking! :)

Trust me, I got caught out in a couple of previous drives where I did myself out of probably 10,000 words by relying just on the prosesize tool (which I still do use for most articles that are primarily straight text) before I found this out late in the March drive! --jjron (talk) 02:51, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Oh, you may also be interested in this discussion: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Guild_of_Copy_Editors/Backlog_elimination_drives/March_2011#Word_count_for_lists_and_indents. That's I think where I found out about this issue. FWIW I make a bit of a judgement call, e.g., where I spend a lot of time working on a list or table such as in the WSC Results article I do count it, but in some articles you basically skip the lists or tables, in which case I don't bother counting it. Having said which, not all users make such judgement calls, for example they'll copyedit a 200 word section [1] and count it as a 2,500 word article [2], which rather makes the whole word count thing a bit of a farce anyway. ;) --jjron (talk) 03:16, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

That's a fair call although Did you know ... uses stricter criteria as I've been bitten by them before. I took my guidance from the main drive page so maybe that should be updated with information about lists. Of course, I realize now that I have done myself out of some words on the long copyedits, but what the hell :). Best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 06:12, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, at the end of the last drive when I found out about this I was almost going to go back and recalculate the articles where I'd done considerable work with lists or tables, but ended up not bothering. But I did think to myself I'm not going to miss out next time! Probably good for you that you've found out early in the process.
BTW, when someone suddenly appears high up on the leaderboard I tend to go and have a random peak at their copyedits (which is how I found that one I linked to above). Did so when you suddenly appeared a couple of days ago and the ones I looked at seemed good. However, to be honest, I don't think that everyone that participates in these drives does a very good job of it; at least let's say there's highly variable standards. I'd probably put it at under fifty percent of the participants who do it well, so yeah, in a sense the drives are good, but as with anything it's all open to abuse. I reckon I make a fair fist of the ones I copyedit, so feel I'm justified in claiming whatever words I legally can, and so should you if you're doing a good job. Cheers, --jjron (talk) 11:28, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
Have now added a link on the main drive page to the page size section of the FAQ as you suggested. You're right - how are new people meant to know about this? Let's see if it sticks. --jjron (talk) 11:51, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the link. As you say, I agree standards vary according to how concientious people are with their copyediting. I have quite a good reputation having got a fair few articles to GA/FA so I'm careful to maintain that. Best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 21:40, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Peer review for Eveline Hanska?

Hello there Philg88! I'm working to take the article about Eveline Hańska (wife of Honoré de Balzac) to FAC. Do you have time for a quick peer review? Thanks in advance! Scartol • Tok 12:22, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't really do peer reviews particularly as at the moment I am tied up with the latest copyedit backlog drive. My first comment though is that you need to add a {{persondata|PLEASE SEE [[WP:PDATA]]!}} template. You can request a peer review here or copyedit edit request here. Good luck! ► Philg88 ◄  talk 20:40, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
No worries. I added the persondata; thanks for that. I've got some other folks doing PRs. Cheers! Scartol • Tok 20:51, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello

I was wondering, since you're a copyeditor and likely a 1,000x better at prose-related stuff than I am, could you review and leave some comments about the current FLC List of accolades received by Winter's Bone? It would be very appreciated! Crystal Clear x3 22:06, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi, it's done, hope you like it :) ► Philg88 ◄  talk 22:40, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank you very much! Crystal Clear x3 22:46, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Not to bother you again but, if you would't mind, could you leave some feedback on the FLC page about whether or not you think the list should be an FL? Regards Crystal Clear x3 02:41, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure that I can - since I copyedited the article I am now considered a "concerned editor" I believe. If that isn't the case let me know and I will leave some comments. Best ► Philg88 ◄  talk 02:55, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

I just asked and they said "Of course they would be allowed to participate in the FLC, but they should make their involvement with the article clear" =) Crystal Clear x3 05:57, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
  Done. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 07:57, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive update

Guild of Copy Editors May 2011 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors May 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your mid-drive newsletter.

Participation

GOCE May 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 54 people have signed up for the drive, and 33 are actively participating. If you signed up for the drive but have not participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you have not signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. If you have questions about getting started, feel free to talk to us. Many thanks to those editors who have been helping out at the Requests page. We currently have 17 articles awaiting edit.

Progress report

We are making slow progress on achieving our target of reducing the overall backlog by 15%; in order to accomplish this goal we will need to complete about 400 more articles. However, we are making good progress on the 2009 backlog, as we have eliminated over half of the articles from 2009 that were present at the start of the drive. Let's concentrate our fire power on the remaining months from 2009; leaderboard awards will be handed out for 2009 articles this drive. Thank you for participating in the May 2011 drive. We hope it will be another success!

Hello Wikifiers!

Sorry this Newsletter is late, It should have gone out a month ago. I've been very busy in real life and didn't have time to get over to the newsletter. In this edition of the Newsletter, we have an editorial written by our new executive coordinator; Guoguo12. Guoguo12 has succeeded Mono due to an indefinite wikibreak. Thanks for starting the copyedit, but due to a content dispute, the content may change dramatically. I would request to temporarily halt the copyedit till the dispute is resolved. I will get back to me, after it is resolved. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:44, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Dear Philg88, I am interested in using modified version of your image as a part of my archaeological projects logo, and would like your permission to do so. I can be reached at [email protected] Darren Poltorak 74.77.100.228 (talk) 21:35, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi, you can certainly use the image - you don't need my permission - just credit the source as a Wikipedia image released under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported licence.

Ahalya

Thanks for copyediting that article, just keep in mind that placing a CE tag when the article hits the main page is discouraged. There is one typo there of extra-martial (marital). I'm not going to correct that because of the tag. Materialscientist (talk) 01:40, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't know that it was going on the main page - wasn't mentioned in the GOCE request. I will remove the CE tag hoping there are no edit conflicts and correct the spelling error. Best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 01:46, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
I sometimes protect an article and then realize it is being mass-edited only because it is on the main page :-). Sometimes adding an article to the watchlist helps because the DYK bot posts a note at its talk when it just hits the main page. One way to keep going is to remove the tag and edit section by section. It is a very quiet time now, thus maybe no-one else will be editing. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 01:55, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I've done that - only a few sections to go now anyway. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 01:57, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the copyedit. I have addressed your clarification requests with comments and some changes. Please check if any more clarification is needed. When you are done, please add the GOCE tag on the talk.
Sorry, I didn't track the DYK nomination after it passed, so didn't know when Ahalya was going to appear on main page. Will remember to inform the copyeditor next time. :) --Redtigerxyz Talk 03:55, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

No problem with the DYK nomination, you did mention it on the original request but I didn't think it was imminent (as it normally takes more than a month for my DYK submissions to appear :(). Anyway, I have made a couple of changes and inserted another clarification request with regard to the sentence containing "leave to". I have also rewritten the info on the stones in the Tamil poem - bear in mind I am not an expert on the subject but I don't think I've altered the meaning of what is meant. Let me know if there are any further queries - the article is shaping up nicely for GA although I'm still wondering how on earth they found space to put 1,000 vaginas on Indra's body :). Best ► Philg88 ◄  talk 06:50, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

The stones info in the Tamil poem is right. "I'm still wondering how on earth..." RE: Hmm.. Good query. May be because it is related more to heaven than earth.. ;)... Thanks for the copyedit. Any other observations/suggestions that might help Ahalya become better? --Redtigerxyz Talk 10:32, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Peer Review Request - Walt Disney

I have reopened up the article Walt Disney for peer review over here. I noticed you are a volunteer over at peer review and was hoping that you could provide some time and energy to take a look at the article and provide feedback. Thank you. Tiggerjay (talk) 00:03, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I can do a copyedit on the article rather than the review itself. Is that what you want? Best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 00:06, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Feedback on Jardine page

Thank you so much for your dedicating to maintaining this page. I work with the Jardines Group via the consultancy GolinHarris. For some time, I've felt that the entry itself probably needed more significant changes to make it more relevant to the Group today. These are the kind of updates that are most likely only available from the Group itself. Before making any edits, given your activity on the page, I wanted to determine if you would be willing to view the re-write in advance of posting. Basically, we just thought it needed trimming, and updating of how the Group is structured today. If nothing else, would you be open receiving data from us? I can be reached at [email protected]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JMmorganGH (talkcontribs) 12:50, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
