Modifiying Discussion page
editI noticed you removed what I had put in on the discussion page for the Coast Guard page. In Wikipedia, you are never supposed to remove information from a discussion page (even your own talk page!) that someone else wrote unless it violates copyright or is libelous. Discussion pages can be archived when they get too long but the content should not be changed --- Skapur
- I didn't remove or change any comments. I combined similar sections into the same section for clarity and to show that the same issue has been an issue for a while, that it has been repeatedly been brought up. Otherwise you have one issue brought up in four different places on the discussion page. While we're talking, I just want to say good job on all the work you've done on the CG page. Northwestern Michigan College Edit

I noticed you have recently removed a paragraph from Northwestern Michigan College's wikipedia page because it did not conform to Wikipedia's NPOV. I am a journalist with Northwestern Michigan College's student newspaper the White Pine Press. My name is John Parker. The paragraph you removed was rather inflammatory. Could I ask you some questions about how you came across it, why you edited the page, and how you are affliated with Northwestern Michigan College? That would be very helpful, thank you Pesco!

- Hello, sure. I came across the page because I have edited maritime-related pages in the past and I have them in my watch list. Northwest Michigan College is the home of Great Lakes Maritime Academy, so that's the connection that led to my previous edits. I saw the article name and previous editor's name on my watchlist. I saw that the account did not have a user or talk page. I often create talk pages for new users by putting a welcome message on a new user talk page. I also checked out the user's contributions, which led me to discover the nature of his edits. His other edit regarding the school's radio station was similar in nature and was reverted that day. I reverted the edit on Northwest Michigan College because, as you noted, it was an inflammatory edit that did not cite any references. I have no affiliation with Northwest Michigan College. Hello Pesco, I'd be interested in learning wiki better. That way I could upload verifyable docs to support the facts of NMC's failures to honor free speech and due process rights. Docs from the college, elected representatives of state and federal government,and federal governmental agencies. I am also an Eagle Scout. I was accepted as an alternate to the US Naval Academy by MI Senator Levin in 1972. The college's actions to deny due process and civil liberties disturbs me greatly. Many docs were shared with John Parker to encourage the college newspaper to cover these long-standing problems with the college.
I'm not sure that this message will get to you, its my first attempt to communicate through the website. I'd appreciate a response if you do get it. I can't promise that I'll check in again soon though.

9/11 GI Bill edits
editGreat job on the clean-up of the 9/11 GI Bill page. I have several messages in with VA to fix some of their FAQs. Have found forum after forum incorrectly quoting incorrect info from elsewhere. Effectively nobody reads the law, which is not so hard as legal docs go. Anyway, just so you know not ANY Reserve Active duty that counts, it must have the specific sections in the orders as things stand now. Not to complain, but myself and many others are planning our lives around this funding. With so many thinking they are not entitled to it, its just a screw-up on the part of VA and Military.com for putting out bad or misleading info. - What's the use of any article? These are useful for historians of the California Gold Rush, as many of these places arose, roared, boomed and busted during that time - lots of colorful history to be written on them, just not all by me. Some geneologists like to know where their ancestors were and perhaps still are. Some are interested in the settlement of California and how various gold rushes amid the big one prompted the sporatic settlement patterns still affecting the state. Some are political historians who may be interested to know the context in which the careers of at least 2 California Assemblymembers arose (yes, in these small towns) - just like we want to know what makes our politicians tick, some historians like to know where the politicians that steered California into the Union not the Confederacy came from. And then there's the locals who like to see their names in print - to add details, to do research into the history of their places. In short, these articles are as much use as their readers put them. Judging by the response to the various other geographic projects, there's a fair consensus that these are useful. In your new page patrolling, you'll find it more profitable to focus on unreferenced stuff than on these. For a geographical place, take Dzolo for instance. A you know what, we're not going to delete that either if someone can (and probably could) find a reference that it exists/existed. Creed of the United States Coast Guardsman
editThank you so much for your addition to the United States Coast Guard article of the Creed of the United States Coast Guardsman written by Admiral Hamlet. I linked his name in the article after you posted. I had put the Creed in his article several months ago. I don't know why I didn't think to add it to the CG article but I failed to do so. I have been wrestling with the term "Guardian" for several months now. I am, and will always be, a Coast Guardsman; I don't care what the Commandant wants to call it. The Guard has become so politicially correct these days that they don't want to offend anyone except us old retired "Guardsmen" that don't count anymore anyway. The Marines wouldn't change their name for members of their service because they value tradition; so why, after almost 95 years of being referred to as Coast Guardsmen does Admiral Allen decide that we are "Guardians" now? I have great respect for the Admiral, but I think he is making a mistake. I believe that changing the name that service members are referred to violates the first Core Value: Honor. Thousands of men and women have been proud to be called Coast Guardsmen for the last 90 years, and to change the name diminishes the great history of service to country that the Coast Guardsman has provided. - Hi Cuprum! No problem. After 5 yrs of service I sadly just encountered the Creed the other day... When I found it, though, I was hit by its powerful prose. "I shall sell life dearly to an enemy of my country, but give it freely to rescue those in peril." I love it. I've been trying to wrap my brain around "Guardian", also, and I'm still on the fence. Seems to tread too close to "National Guard" for my liking; I don't want to take anything away from them. I believe in Coast Guardsmen, formally, and Coasties, as the officially embraced nickname, instead of something to be shyed away from. USCGA Image
editIn an answer to your question in the USCGA article: these are Officer Candidates, not 1/c cadets. They have similar shoulder boards. There is no ceremony in which 1/c cadets would don full dress white w/ swords on Washington Parade field. Further evidence is that there are several personnel with a large set of medals in this picture, this would be highly unusual for a group of 1/c cadets. This could be relabeled, but I dont think that would fit in the page as it is about cadet issues in general and not officer candidate school. (O1eqlsfun (talk) 19:02, 7 March 2010 (UTC))

Could sure use your help, Shipmate
editThe article Creed of the United States Coast Guardsman has been deleted by User:Bearcat. Initially, the deletion was about a "blatant copyright violation". I contacted him about it on his talk page and reminded him that the Creed was in the public domain (at least I think it is!) His reply to my talk page was more about copying verbatim from source. How do you have an article about a creed without quoting the creed? On 17 June my talk page was pinged by User:CorenSearchBot notifying me about copyright violations on the Creed because I had supposedly copied it in whole from Jack's Joint! I replied and thought the issue was taken care of. My question is will you help me in getting this reinstated and add some further research to the article so that it will stand by itself like other Creed articles? Examples include Rifleman's Creed, Airman's Creed, U.S. Soldier's Creed. You have far more experience than I on issues dealing with deletions. If I'm in the wrong on this I will let the deletion stand, but I as well as you and every other Coast Guardsman have lived the words of the Creed and I can't let the thing drop without a try. - Hey Chief. I'm not sure Pesco is around, so I might just jump in here. First off, there is some coverage of the creed here. Second: did the article have any content beyond the actual text of the creed itself? If so, we can get a copy in userspace to develop a bit before putting it back in article space. If not making a copy of United_States_Coast_Guard#Creed_of_the_United_States_Coast_Guardsman in your sandbox (for example User:Cuprum17/creed) might be a good start. The key to making an article about a piece of text like this is to have a few reliable sources that discuss the creed itself. The references used on the creed section of the USCG article are probably a good place to start, the The Coast Guardsman's Manual probably says some things about it, this is an official copy that can be cited, and this book might be useful. This discusses the creed a bit. Page 14 of this shows another use. Well, that should be enough for a start. Cheers. HausTalk 21:18, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

editVoting for the upcoming project coordinator election closes soon, at 23:59 on 28 September. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. Voting is conducted using simple approval voting and questions for the candidates are welcome. editHello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
