editHi. Thank you for your contributions. However, I doubt whether the community would appreciate articles by well established editors and administrators being nominated for deletion by someone who appears to have an agenda against bagpipe related articles and extremely little experience on Wikipedia. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 06:24, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
Having now reviewed every single one of your edits, it appears that you may well be a valuable authority on pipe bands and I hope you will continue to expand such articles. However, sources are often difficult to find for such a topic and I would still guard against nominating borderline ones for deletion. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 06:55, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hi. I've edited Wikipedia in the past, so know a fair bit about various policies and guidelines - although may not pay much heed to them.
- The situation on pipe band articles is very odd - I've collected on my user page some articles that absolutely should exist - historic pipe bands, multiple gold medal winners - and yet don't. On the other hand, there are some articles of very borderline notability. Since there exists a good deal of confusion with people not familiar with the various levels of competition and what the significance of various competitions are, I've created User:Ostrichyearning/Piping, which may become a more specific guideline for pipers and bands. Ostrichyearning (talk) 22:04, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
- When you nominate an article for deletion, you should provide a reason based on Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Otherwise the nominations may be considered disruptive and pointless. Would you be so kind as to add the reasons to your recent nominations, or withdraw them? Edison (talk) 20:30, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for March 1
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Northern Meeting, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Murray Henderson. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Incomplete DYK nomination
editHello! Your submission of Template:Did you know nominations/Invergordon Distillery Pipe Band at the Did You Know nominations page is not complete; see step 3 of the nomination procedure. If you do not want to continue with the nomination, tag the nomination page with {{db-g7}}, or ask a DYK admin. Thank you. DYKHousekeepingBot (talk) 06:50, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

editHello, I'm 115ash. I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions —the one you made with this edit to John Burgess— because it didn’t appear constructive to me. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. 115ash→(☏) 12:43, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Back issues of Piping Times
editPiping Times appears to be available at the British Library. I'd call it the No. #1 source for piping related news, but I have no idea how to search through previous editions to determine which ones to get. Any ideas? PanydThe muffin is not subtle 12:19, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi User:Panyd, just seen this! Not sure there's an online searchable resource other than a few pdfs around but I'm based around London so can go to the British Library if there's issues that might be useful? all the best, Ostrichyearning3 (talk) 21:15, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- I also go to the British Library a lot but unfortunately I can't know what's useful if I can't search through them online. I could just grab an issue at random and look through it but that doesn't seem like the most efficient way to search for things. Always an issue with niche subjects though. Thank you for the offer! Speedy deletion nomination of J. Reid Maxwell
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on J. Reid Maxwell requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Reference formatting tools
editHi Ostrichyearning, I've noticed your work regarding piping and pipe band related articles for some time and with appreciation. I thought you might find this tool useful for formatting and expanding references automatically: https://tools.wmflabs.org/refill/
You just put the name of the article in the "page name" box, click on "fix page", check the results and, if they are correct (which they usually are) save them.
Alternatively you can use: http://dispenser.homenet.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/webreflinks.py
All the best, Mutt Lunker (talk) 14:57, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hi User:Mutt Lunker, just seen this! Cheers, I do use it now, it's a great tool. I'm hopefully back for a bit doing some piping articles if you want to have a look at them, it's all being logged at Wikipedia:WikiProject Pipe Bands/open tasks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ostrichyearning3 (talk • contribs) 21:21, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
New Page Review needs your help
editHi Ostrichyearning,
As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).
Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.
Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.
It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.
(Sent to all active AfC reviewers) MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:33, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the fix. It seems, though, that now tables don't work at all. See activation product for example. I am not sure why they don't work. Somehow the expansion now ruins the table markup. Gah4 (talk) 03:19, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Seems that an extra newline messed up tables. I thought newlines in table entries weren't a problem, but this seemed to fix it. Thanks. Gah4 (talk) 03:58, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Good spot - amazing how much damage you can do with some white space... Ostrichyearning (talk) 13:08, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:58, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
