Maps

I am using a very crude method for generating the maps. Open the file   in GIMP and use the paint brush to sketch the appropriate highway. I am sure there exists a better way of doing this. You can ofcourse start drawing more maps from this file and upload to Commons. Thanks.. AbhijitSathe (talk) 18:05, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:National Highway 1.svg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by STBotI. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 00:47, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Highway Infobox

Hey, do you think this additional field highway_image in the Template:Indian highways routebox makes sense? We will have to change all National Highway pages to insert this field. Where are we going to get these images anyway?

Welcome to the Countries WikiProject - here's your first assignment!

Hi. I noticed you just joined the Wikipedia:WikiProject Countries, and that you are involved with the development of India-related coverage on Wikipedia.

The coverage of India is presented in Wikipedia's reference resources. There's the Outline of India, which serves as the table of contents of India-related material on Wikipedia. There's the Index of India-related articles, which is an alphabetical list of articles pertaining to India. Portal:India serves as a "main page" for the subject of India, modeled after Wikipedia's Main page. And Category:India is a categorical index of articles related to India.

Of these reference aids, the Outline of India is the most important, because it shows the structure of India's subtopics (what belongs to what), and is formatted for easy comparison with the outlines of other countries.

A major effort is underway to standardize the presentation of country-related information on Wikipedia and in all its country-related articles (including the names of those articles). The approach being taken is the reverse outlining of each country's coverage on Wikipedia. A reverse outline is one that is created after the fact, that is, after a publication has been written (based on its current structure), rather than before ("regular outlines" are created before writing begins to provide a subject's structure as a plan for writing). Reverse outlines are excellent tools for discovering problems in an existing publication, such as gaps and inconsistencies, and for revising publications to fix the problems, adjust the structure, and improve the publication in various other ways. For more information, Google the phrases "reverse outline" and "reverse outlining".

The Outline of India is an example of a reverse outline.

A set of outlines for all of the countries of the world has been created by the Outline of knowledge WikiProject. They are building a hierarchical classification (that is, an outline) of all of human knowledge where each page in this gigantic outline is itself an outline of a particular subject. For the past year, they have been focusing on the countries of the World.

These outlines share a common format, presenting similar information about each country in a standard order. The standard format is presented on Template:Outline country. Not all the countries fit the standard yet. For example, some articles' names do not match the standard, and so the links show up red. And some articles, while named correctly (see WP:COMMONNAME) do not fit the standard - those need redirects that lead to them from the standard article names.

Because the topics of countries differ, article links not covered in the standard are simply added to the relevant sections of each country's outline where they fit the best, usually in alphabetical order. In this way, each country's outline is individualized.

The Outline of India is incomplete, and needs someone to develop it (and the articles it links to) further.

And since you are an enthusiastic new member of the Countries WikiProject, that person is you!

Welcome to the team!  :)

Instructions on how to develop a country outine can be found at User:The Transhumanist/Outline of knowledge#Country outline development.

Since the outline is a de facto site map of India on Wikipedia, you'll find it useful as a base of operations for developing Wikipedia's coverage of India.

Good luck. Have fun. And...

Thank you.

Request for help

I thought it might be a good idea to run a contest or two through the Countries WikiProject to attract editors to improve country coverage on Wikipedia, especially the country outlines.

I noticed you are a member of the WikiProject, and was wondering if you could help.

I've posted a message at Countries WikiProject talk page to get discussion started on what the awards programs should be and how they should be run.

Your ideas and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

License tagging for File:India Highway map.svg

Thanks for uploading File:India Highway map.svg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 09:06, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

RE: Invite

Thanks for the invite, I'll join but I have to make a point: There is NO 'National Expressway' in India except for the A'bad Vadodra one, MPEW is a state expressway, and same goes for BMIC. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 08:57, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Better maps

Hey, check out high resolution maps on the Indian highway pages e.g. National Highway 1 (India) I will upgrade all the maps in the near future and create all the remaining missing maps. Abhijit Sathe (talk) 03:09, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Using coordinates to create images sounds like a good idea. But how would you highlight the highway you want to show? Can you make one image and share with everyone? Abhijit Sathe (talk) 13:43, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Check this out.. [[Category:Indian National Highways]] I have arranged first 80 NHs in statewide sub-categories rather than listing them all in National Highways category. Much cleaner and easier to navigate. Can you start doing this at your convenience? Abhijit Sathe (talk) 21:34, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

National Highway shield

I saw your question about the shield, and answered in the Map Lab, but now I'm confused- it appears you created the original, so you presumably know it isn't parameter driven. I also see the note above, which also confused me as the image seems to have a license.--Sphilbrick (talk) 21:06, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Indian Road Project Invite

Thanks for the invite to the road project. I have been a wikignome for a quite sometime and thought will head into some projects. Let me know what are key tasks of a project member as am a noobie in this area. On a side note, i would like to ask why was the SH17 Kerala removed from the navbox? I just added the Scenic Roads from the category page. If you wish to keep only National highways in the navbox, you might also remove East Coast Road as i guess its not a NH. I feel we should have all scenic roads as we have very of them Srikanth t 13:11, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Well since i thought these are "special highways" and not many notice them usually, it might be worth having. You may delete them if you think its not necessary. Srikanth t 14:10, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Railways in India

Thank you! For inviting me to discuss on WP:INRI to improve the articles and organization of the articles. First for all the articles: Indian Railways and Rail Transport in India, need to be brought to their lost glory. Then we can proceed to the articles on the zones of Indian railways and, we can improve articles on other vital components like stations (at least to GA status), subsidies etc.. For every article, there need to be a base article of it's type, on which we can imitate other articles. We can plan accordingly and strive for the best.--SharadbobTalkC 10:22, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

Current proposals and discussions
  • A discussion is underway here to reach a consensus regarding the use of Indian number names (lakh, crore etc.) in Wikipedia articles. Please participate and add your comments.
  • A discussion is in progress here in order to determine whether non-Western (including Indian) forms of classical music should be referred to by the nomenclature of art music instead of classical music. Please participate and add your comments.
  • Watchlist the Articles for Deletions page for India related discussions. Opinions from more Indian Wikipedians are required in many of the discussions.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Members section of WikiProject India. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!
