The Wave Tower

Hi,I noticed you have reverted the changes I made to this article. The text added was written byu me, it was me who posted it to Dexigner (and other architecture news sites where you may have seen it), so I think there is nt a problem with it. In any case I am new to editing articles in Wikipedia, so I'll wait for your reply before reverting the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Archdetails (talkcontribs) 08:24, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

List of companies in the United Arab Emirates

In reference to the Afd at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of companies in the United Arab Emirates which you commented on, I have now reformatted the list, removing entities which are not domiciled in the UAE (even though they may operate there), removing entries which are not companies (such as TV channels) and adding many using a few different sources. Please look at the list, and hopefully you can look at my comments in the Afd also. --Russavia (talk) 08:37, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Burj Dubai and its height on www.BurjDubai.com

Hi there,

I saw you changed my editing section on the Burj Dubai, about it claiming, on the official website, to be the tallest structure on earth. You undid this, as you say it referred to free-standing structures. The Wikipedia article does this, Burj Dubai's website does not. [http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/5012/burjdubaisk5.jpg] shows this, or if you don't believe me, go to [1] and wait for the relevant 'Did You Know?' text to appear. Sorry to be a nuisance, but it is true. A reply would be much appreciated.

Yours amicably,

Ug —Preceding unsigned comment added by Uranium grenade (talkcontribs) 20:59, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Point taken, but surely, it's a fact. Doesn't this mean that it's legitimate to put it in? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Uranium grenade (talkcontribs) 20:17, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Lamcy Plaza

Hi, thanks for your note. Not sure what I was thinking there...it should have read 3/13/07...I've gone ahead and corrected it. Thanks AreJay (talk) 21:19, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Please respond at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of tallest buildings in Toronto. Cheers. Gary King (talk) 06:53, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Re:Dubai templates and ACID

I think it is definitely about time to create the template page. That will be a good project for the upcoming week. Do you think it should be laid out in a similar format to that of the Engineering page? As for the stub templates, do you think we should just stick with the existing UAE ones? If we want to create new stub templates, that means proposing new stub types at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals. Cheers, Rai-me 23:29, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh, and I completely concur with your idea about input. I was hoping to start a drive to bring Dubai to featured status (great work on improving image placement, by the way), so that can be the first article in a newly created ACID. Cheers, Rai-me 23:31, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
The page looks great. Do you have any color preference? I would be happy to change it. The best page to use as an index of color codes, IMO, is Web colors. The codes on my user page are HTML hexadecimal, but I now prefer to use the X11 hex codes given Web colors#X11 color names, as there is a better selection presented. For the navbox, there are a few options. We can remove it from the page all togther, center it above or below the template table, or create a navbar, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Engineering/navbar. Do you like any of these ideas? I think the page would be best in the "main pages" section, as it is a project page and not a template.
Oh, and I definitely agree that a struct-stub template should be created. Whether it is Dubai- or UAE- depends on whether or not we create new Dubai-stub categories, or stick with UAE ones. It is your call. But we should probably nominate the new stub types soon at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals. As for Dubai reaching featured status, it is a bit of a stretch at present. Bringing the article to GA-status first would be a good idea (often, if an article is on a FA drive, becoming a GA is one step of the process). Cheers, Rai-me 16:49, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Also, I thought you would find it interesting that List of tallest buildings in Dubai is going to be the April list of the month (the first building list LOTM), as it was the leading votegetter at (the proposed) WP:LOTD for the month. Cheers, Rai-me 17:06, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Glad to see you are back. Do you like the current color layout on the template page? I tried lighter sand colors, but they all blended in too much with the project banner templates. And I agree; the navbox doesn't need to be on the page. The best option would either be to leave it as it is now, or create a Dubai navbar, similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Engineering/navbar. Do you think we should create such a navbar, or just leave the page as it is now? I am undecided, but creating a navbar would be very easy. Cheers, Rai-me 01:51, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I have created Wikipedia:WikiProject Dubai/navbar. Cheers, Rai-me 02:28, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Navbars would be project pages, as they are titled Wikipedia:Wikiproject... and not titled Template:.... Cheers, Rai-me 02:38, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
You're too modest ;) -- Rai-me 15:53, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

UAE Noticeboard

Hi Leitmanp, I've been feeling for some time that a noticeboard for UAE related topics would help centralize discussions and remove inconsistencies/redundancies in UAE related articles. I've been noticing the number of inconsistencies in the Abu Dhabi article and several other UAE-related articles and I think a central noticeboard along the lines of the Australia or India noticeboards would help channel content around the UAE.

A noticeboard is different from a WikiProject in that a noticeboard has no explicit mission-statement other than to provide a central forum for users interested in collaborating on UAE-related issues. I just wanted to get your thoughts on the project, as a regular contributor to UAE-related articles. With the Dubai WikiProject, there has been improvement in the quality of Dubai related articles. However, articles on the other emirates seem to be in bad shape. The noticeboard won't attempt to correct these issues, but will provide a central forum and hopefully, promote collaboration among users interested in UAE articles. It can also serve as a central point to arbitrate edit-wars or provide assistance to other editors (Arabic translations, article assessments, peer reviews, etc). One of the ideas that I had in mind for the noticeboard was to create a set of standard guidelines around structuring articles (standard structure for cities, emirates, locations etc). Your thoughts on setting up such a noticeboard are greatly appreciated. Thanks AreJay (talk) 18:48, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for your feedback! I actually had no idea a UAE Wikiproject even existed. You are right that most Newsboards support many articles and editors and we're certainly not in the same league as some of the other boards from a volume of articles and number of contributors standpoint. I do think though that this may be the way to go simply because a Newsboard is reactive, while a WikiProject is more proactive. So, you'd only go to a Newsboard for a specific purpose (a question, a comment, a request for assistance, etc)...I think that works well for UAE related articles because like you said, there aren't too many contributors at the moment and all/most of us would probably prefer to dedicate our time in improving the wealth of information on the UAE.
In that respect, maintaining a Newsboard wouldn't be time consuming at all, since all you're doing is providing a platform for people to ask questions, request assistance, etc. This might be the ideal way to get contributors together as the volume of UAE-related information increases. To (mis)quote Kevin Costner, "if you build it, they *may* come". I will mull it over and see if it really makes sense to move forward with this. Thanks again for the feedback. Developments in Dubai Template

I sort of went out on a limb and made a few major revisions on some dubai articles even though they are not really my area, i'm sure others will cut them back in the next few days. For weeks now, I've been trying to organize and update all the stuff on the Future Developments in Singapore article and I even made a template for it. My problem is that other than Dubai, no other city on Earth seems to have a page for its on-going developments and proposals. I was looking for some sort of standard to base my work on, and found the dubai article to be equally messy. So, in an attempt to reconcile the differences between Future Developments in Singapore and Developments in Dubai, I made a template for Dubai, but I think it is a little irregular. See, Template:Developments in Dubai I think it is a little more general than Template:Future Dubai skyscrapers and still needed, for it serves a slightly different purpose. I'd like to see some sort of common format between the city templates. What do you think? Is my template uncalled for? How should it be edited? Are the categories appropriate? The problem with both is that certain items are generalized as something like "shopping mall" when it is really many things. There is also this word, "future" which is used in the Singaporean article but not in the Dubai counterpart, which the Dubai article to include this "completed" section. But for the article to be a general "developments" article and have a list of complete projects, then it must be referring to a certain period of development. For every building that ever existed in Dubai could technically be called completed. For that reason, I sort of feel like the Singaporean article is better titled. Tell me your thoughts. I don't want to make such decisions on my own and if you have invested a lot of effort into this, then I'd be interested your council.

Also, do move to Dubai, I've been an American ex-pat for a few years now and I can testify to it being easier than you think. Just go. If you are young and confident, you can move to any city in the world and just start looking for work. Every major city has the same jobs. The adjusting is always about the same. You will need enough money to carry you through to your first pay check, but then you are solid. DaronDierkes (talk) 10:32, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

In the template I made, I had a vague idea to link the various topics to relevant articles, but lacking an over-arching article on malls in Dubai, I linked it to the template. By that measure, my template seems redundant, as the Developments article is redundant. Some sort of portal is needed though to consolidate all on-going projects, which I think is what the developments article was for. It is, as you say, strangely incomplete though. I'm curious to know if the developments in dubai article is meant as an ever-changing current events article or if it is supposed to cover a specifc period of development characterized by a few major projects.
Indeed, it is like an advertisement, but it is also one of the only places one may go to stay on top of the sprawling maddness over there. In moving to Singapore, I've found the future developments in Singapore very useful for figuring out what the giant dirt pits around the island are for. Where else can such information go? It is only really an advertisement for Dubai in that most other cities do not have such articles and Dubai is one of the only places where an article of such magnitude is possible. St. Louis, my hometown? No, are buildings are small and our visions downcast. We got a new baseball stadium and a few train stations, that's about it for the decade. (I find articles on these topics helpful too though).
Your definition of development is reasonable, but is made somewhat vague by including completed developments in the list. The London Eye is kind of old, isn't it? I rode it a year ago. For that matter, the Singapore Flyer is complete now, and not on the list of future developments in singapore (not by my doing, either). When does "recent" become not "recent?" Blockbuster still includes the strangest movies in the New Release section, no? Perhaps we are both talking about the same thing from different angles. The inclusion of the word "future" is the exclusion of projects that are "completed." This would give the article some criteria and purpose by creating a strict definition of what is and is not worthy of inclusion. Even then, how do you draw the line on the completion of one of the palm islands when sand and aggregate have stopped flowing but buildings are still going up?
Anyway, what do you think of merging {{Skyscrapers of Dubai}} with {{Future Skyscrapers of Dubai}}? That would be a large template, but would be in line with the mall template and would justify the removal of my template if similar templates were made for transportation and all those other topics. Then each of those templates could be linked to the Dubai Related Topics template. As it stands, that is not the case, and I feel like my template serves a distinct purpose. Do you catch my meaning here?
For living abroad, I suppose I can only speak from my own experience. I lived in Seoul for a year and a couple months in Barcelona. I've been in Singapore for some time now as well. In all three cities, I suffered terrible financial hardships in the first month. Then I got my first paycheck, paid my rent, and all was well. Before I leave Singapore, I plan to create a bigger cushion (of money) to sit on the next time I jump cities. In Seoul I had a decent paycheck and my apartment was quite nice. Barcelona, I rented a room in a flat with five other people... In Singapore, I kid you not, I'm paying like $2,000 a month. Singapore is suffering from a crazy real estate problem right now. In all three cities, inflation was negligible and the cost of living some what constant. If Dubai's cost of living is escalating, then my advice is only true of jobs with escalating pay (yeah right). I too wish to one day live in Dubai, but I was going to wait for some personal development milestones, not dubai development milestones. If what you say is true, perhaps I should be heeding your advice. :o) DaronDierkes (talk) 05:32, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
In the case of History having History of Dubai under it, I agree with you, we should limit redundancy. Though my action would be to remove the History of Dubai part and keep the word history linked to History of Dubai... that's a complicated statement, probably doesn't get across well. Why, oh why would anybody want to see the general article for building or History? It is barely on topic.
Perhaps some people find that useful, just not me. We have a difference of opinion there. If the articles that I wish to link are also there such as History and History of Dubai then I guess we're ok.
I'm really taken aback by your response. We are essentially talking about how we prefer to process information, which makes it a somewhat creative process, so flexibility is a must. Still, I didn't expect you to hold this position. You and people like Raime are the experts here, so I will concede to you, but I cannot understand it.
Ok, I just edited the Dubai related topics template, thinking about the name of the template, you are right, those are topics, so I included them in the list and not as headings. I know there is no geography of dubai article, but that's just because it hasn't been made yet, there is such an article for almost every other country and region out there, so if it stays red I assume someone will make it a stub eventually.
I changed the developments template too. I had redundantly listed List of Tallest Buildings in Dubai twice... Suppose you're right.
I suppose I'll stick to editing cities I've been to, :o).
Personal development milestones vs, Dubai development milestones? I just meant that I should develop my own stable income streams independent of my primary job, which changes every year or so anyway, as opposed to waiting until Dubai develops a welfare state to support me etc. Things like that.
I'm also not done with Asia yet. I've got a lot of China and India to see, and I better hit Oceania while I'm here. I would like to live a few more years over here, perhaps in Tokyo, Taipei, and Mumbai. Then I will transition into the Dubai-Cairo-Istanbul triangle that interests me so. I've been thinking about the American University in Cairo or Dubai actually, some sort of grad program.
P.S. There is no Cities of Asia article out there. Nor are there sub-articles like Cities of South Asia or Cities of East Asia. I sense a project... I really like the layout of [List of cities in China]]. I've been trying to reconcile the difference between "Cities of" and "List of Cities of" They seem to serve different purposes, but every country tends to have one or the other, not both. Then there is the extra "List of Cities of blah by population]], which is usually something that could just be merged into one of the other two. Any thoughts? DaronDierkes (talk) 08:40, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
Yah. You get an award. While speaking against redundancy, I wrote a link for Transportation in Dubai next to an alread existing link. Thank you for removing that. (I'm embarassed)
I made an article for Cities of East Asia BTW, my oh my, it is sloppy. Somebody came along in less than a day and changed it to "List of" Grrr. whatever.
Singapore has a public gallery of models and urban planning explaining. I have noted a number of high quality model pictures such as those on the Dubai Towers page, do you know if Dubai hosts a similar public exhibition?
Is it worthwhile to join projects? I can still edit project pages without being a member of them, right?
Your edits are good, no need to explain. I do think it slightly strange though that though the three palm islands are virtually the same they would be referred to compiled into the same article. They do have different coordinates, geography, etc. They will also be used for very different things. I can only assume that they will eventually have different articles when more information come up, right?DaronDierkes (talk) 06:55, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

UAE

Missed the earlier note, for which I apologize. The question of merging is a reasonable one, which I don't myself have any particular objections to, although I'd prefer to see Dubai merged in as well. The only reason they were all created separately was because of the separate creation of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Dubai as a separate entity, and subsequently my wanting to ensure that all the other emirates get coverage as well. Regarding the redundancy on the banners, that's probably a lesser issue, as tagging an article for both a parent and child project is fairly common. I do however see that, with the exception of Abu Dhabi, which had earlier gotten a proposal for a separate WikiProject at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Archive#Abu Dhabi, that the others aren't ever likely to see particularly much activity. The only questions regarding a merger is whether you would want to see any sort of specialized coverage of the other five emirates, or whether they should all be merged into one entity. Will await action until hearing your response. And, again, my apologies for missing the earlier notice. John Carter (talk) 13:05, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for welcoming into the project. I am facinated by skyscrapers and have even made a userbox for them. Just tell me how I should contribute. I am already contributing to the CN Tower article--Juthani1 (talk) 11:30, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Merging projects

Sorry for missing the earlier message. The proposal sounds good to me. Would you be talking about keeping the existing pages as "subprojects" or removing them altogether, though? I don't have a real opinion one way or another, but I'd probably need to know before doing the merging. John Carter (talk) 14:23, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Emirates Airline's destinations

Hello Leitmanp, I have a question, why do you keep editing Emirates Airlines destinations to 89 in 55 countries. I work for Emirates Airlines and that isnt true, check the website, call emirates, count the destinations, they are over 100 man .. this is a direct quote "Emirates is one of the fastest growing airlines in world, now serving over 100 destinations" from emirates.com and here is the link http://www.emirates.com/ae/english/destinations_offers/route_maps/route_map.aspx.

If you love Dubai so much then edit the truth about the destinations please and not what you think is correct.

Northern Emirates

Maybe I should clarify what I tried to say earlier. Would the Northern Emirates project continue to keep the Sharjah project and others as subprojects (task forces or work groups) of that project, or should there be only one project, without any further subprojects, for all of them? If that question wasn't particularly clear earlier, my apologies. I personally don't have an opinion one way or another, but would want to know when going about doing whatever merging is required. John Carter (talk) 00:07, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

OK. It's getting a bit late in the day for me to be able to be sure that I'll be able to finish all the required changes tonight, but I should be able to get everything done tomorrow, creating a new Wikipedia:WikiProject Northern Emirates, adding it to the Western Asia, and renaming all the other groups as work groups of the NE project. That is, barring some hideous calamity developing in the interim. John Carter (talk) 00:17, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
