Hi, I'm just letting you know that I have removed the account creator permission from your account as the recent creation of the event coordinator user group makes that permission preferred. If you need the permission to create accounts in the future for an event, you can request it at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Event coordinator a few days before the event is slated to begin. developing training programs for new editors

edit
a short video

a document formatted to print to paper

I read over the training program you are developing at User:JenOttawa/Introduction to Medical Editing: Cheat Sheet. This looks great!

The major challenge here is that since 2001 Wikipedia has established no popular or broadly praised online training system. At various times various groups have invested hundreds of thousands of US$ in trying to design a process. Countless volunteer hours have gone into this. Some processes are more popular but nothing is an obvious recommendation.

Your guide is the most practical and direct explanation that I have seen to target academic writers with an invitation and instructions to edit Wikipedia. It seems good and it seems fine to share.

I see that this guide includes a link to the dashboard training. I am also here sharing a video and a document. What these three other training materials have in common is that they offer little practical advice and instead express abstract concepts and do some socializing. Personally, when I do Wikipedia outreach, I emphasize how new Wikipedia editors should learn to talk about Wikipedia with other people on and off-wiki, and de-emphasize understanding technical aspects of Wikipedia. My system has a lot of faults, and although I have presented it to hundreds of people, I cannot say that it has any better outcome than other ideas in circulation. My theory is that if people feel good about editing Wikipedia then they will overcome technical barriers. Alternatively, if they only learn the technical process, then they may not come to feel good about editing until and unless they later have some social experiences. If a person's time is scarce then at least sometimes guiding them to a positive perspective quickly can be a more effective start than giving them a skill set without social context.

I am not sure which way is the right way! Almost all training programs attempt their own system. Yours is off to a more developed start than many other programs reach in their finished state. If I were to suggest any changes it would be what I recommend for almost any writing - make it shorter and make it even easier to understand. It is already very good. Event coordinator granted

edit

After reviewing your request for the "eventcoordinator" permission, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:

  • The event coordinator right removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24-hour period.
  • The event coordinator right allows you to temporarily add the "confirmed" permission to newly created accounts. You should not grant this for more than 10 days.
  • The event coordinator right is not a status symbol. If it remains unused, it is likely to be removed. Abuse of the event coordinator right will result in its removal by an administrator.
  • Please note, if you were previously a member of the "account creator" group, your flag may have been converted to this new group.

If you no longer require the right, let me know, or ask any other administrator. Drop a note on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of the event coordinator right. Happy editing! — xaosflux Talk 18:13, 2 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Your WikiJMed nomination of Leprosy

edit

Hello, The Leprosy article has been imported to v:WikiJournal_Preprints/Leprosy. Whenever you're ready to proceed:

  1. Fill in the "article info" template at the top (often easiest in VisualEditor)
  2. When you're ready to submit it, just fill in the authorship declaration form

Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 04:55, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your help @Evolution and evolvability:. We had not intended to submit the Society and culture section as we did review or improve. How do you suggest to proceed? I will start to fill out the authorship template. Your help is greatly appreciated. JenOttawa (talk) 22:43, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
No problem at all, just remove that section from the copy over at v:WikiJournal_Preprints/Leprosy and it'll be omitted from the peer review. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 04:21, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jen - ProcrasinatingReader bought Paolocmartin (talk · contribs)'s contributions to my attention - It seems they're associated with your project.

I'm a bit concerned about contributions like this, this, and this which whist relevant to your project have been created in inappropriate locations.

It seems the contributor is simply inexperienced with Wikipedia, and is "leaping without looking", so to speak. Is this something that could be handled internally within your project? I'm concerned the editor may end up blocked if they keep creating articles / pages in inappropriate locations, since it's quite a lot of work for other editors to go through and tidy things up.

Please get in touch here, through my talk page, or through Special:EmailUser if there's anything I can do to help.

News from around the site

  • If you've got the time, please review a GA nomination (criteria/instructions). Nominations currently sit two months before review. Let's aim for a month or less.
  • Starting July 3rd, the WMF's "Wikipedia" social media accounts will highlight an "article of the week". If you've got the bandwidth, you can watchlist Social media/Article of the week (on meta) where they'll post the article around a day ahead of time for us to clean up. You can also suggest articles to highlight.
  • A new sister project has been approved by the WMF Board: Abstract Wikipedia.

Discussions of interest

  • Several medicine-related FAs promoted 5 years ago could use a review and update. An effort to organize our efforts is at WT:MED.
  • A large university class is working on medicine-related articles this month. They're largely focused on articles with maintenance tags. The students are working in small groups and posting their goals at each talk page. Consider watchlisting some of the assigned articles and helping the students (and us regulars) have a positive experience.
  • Tom (LT) is spearheading an effort to clean up and organize medicine-related templates, resulting in many active TfD discussions. See a list of active TfDs at WP:MED/Article alerts.

Under the Wikimedia Research Spotlight

Number of academic papers focused on Wikipedia's health content each year

This month's Wikimedia Research Showcase was on the topic "Medical knowledge on Wikipedia". It featured two presentations from invited academics (link).

First, Denise Smith (Mcbrarian) at McMaster and Western Universities received a WMF grant to review the academic literature on "Wikipedia as a health resource". She found 89 papers on the topic, most of which aim to assess our health content's accuracy, comprehensiveness, or readability. Findings vary, but are complicated by poor comparators (e.g. Wikipedia vs. a surgery textbook), the fluidity of content (research becomes dated quickly), and attempts to generalize to "health content" with no discussion of how our content is a patchwork of articles in vastly different states. The remaining papers fall into one of three categories: the use of Wikipedia as (1) a general medical resource, (2) a tool for health education, or (3) a tool for research. Interesting papers in each group, but I'll leave further exploration to the reader. There's a general trend of more papers on this topic over time; Smith is hopeful the stigma towards Wikipedia in academia and healthcare could be eroding. With any luck, her review will help orient academics as they consider studying our content. For more, see her paper in PLoS ONE.

Second, Giovanni Colavizza at the University of Amsterdam sought to assess the reliability and comprehensiveness of our covid-19 coverage by studying our citations. He collected the ~3k citations in our covid articles and compared them to the ~160k total papers on covid/coronaviruses. He found we disproportionately cite articles in more reputable journals, as well as articles that are highly cited, mentioned on Twitter, downloaded on Mendeley, etc. We disfavor citing preprints. To investigate the comprehensiveness of our citations across topics, he used the titles and abstracts of all covid papers to cluster them into five broad topical groups. He finds our citations to each group largely match its proportion in the total literature, with some exceptions (we overcite molecular biology and epidemics papers relative to their proportion in the literature, and undercite clinical medicine and public health papers). One might assume this means our coverage of covid-19 is fairly balanced to the broad topics of the literature. For more, see Colavizza's slide deck and biorxiv preprint.

For the time/interest constrained, see summaries from the authors and from WhatamIdoing.

Drugs in Preganancy

edit

Thank you for your edits on the drugs in pregnancy article. I think that the section for medications containing opioids should be integrated in the opioids section under recreational drugs instead. 8.3.20 Jx130 (talk) 16:33, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Good point @Jx130: I agree and noticed that there was some repeat. I left it for now so that both uses of opioids (illicit and prescription) were accounted for in the article. Any additional improvements that you make would be great! Could we mention opioids in pain control section and then link to the recreational drugs section, for example? Thank you for touching base JenOttawa (talk) 16:49, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jen, I’m a neutral party when it comes to COVID so I tend to convey information from both sides to educate each party using as much humility and understanding as possible.

In the common cold page, it references face masks as showing some effectiveness at preventing transmission referencing “Eccles p. 209“ but I have been unable to locate this source. So you know how the original research can be examined?

Hi Jen. Just to let you know that the cochrane bot didn't run as scheduled yesterday because I moved the code over to a new Raspberry Pi (provided by Wikimedia UK), but forgot to check that script. I fixed a few issues today (updating file directories, and code to python3), and it's running today, hopefully next month it will run as usual. I also fixed the code for the French Wikipedia version, so fr:Projet:Médecine/Cochrane/Bot is being updated again, but I don't know if anyone's looking at that? Thanks. Hi @Ozzie10aaaa: I just did a little work on this article using paraphrased evidence from the background section and (weak) conclusions from a 2019 Cochrane Review on surgery versus conservative approach. I just looked at the history and noticed all the work that you did in October! It is great. Please let me know if I have made any mistakes or if you have additional suggestions. JenOttawa (talk) 20:44, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Im answering here because the real edits are done at Wiki Med Project (the Separated shoulder article was imported to there and Im almost finished with it over there, plus Basilar skull fracture, Ankle fracture and a few others) I did a few initial edits here Ozzie--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 21:03, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for doing all this work to improve the article! I will check it out.JenOttawa (talk) 22:10, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Student editor at mumps

edit

A student editor recently added a few paragraphs to the article for mumps. The issue is that all of the information was either already included in the article or is US-centered. There are smaller issues as well such as reference formatting and reference duplication. Overall, the contributions lower the quality of the article in my opinion. The student is in this course, and the assignment ends on 11 December so is it okay to revert the article to its prior state after then? Velayinosu (talk) 03:15, 27 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Velayinosu: thank you for the message. I agree that it is a fine balance- being hesitant to jump in and revert student work (unless the evidence added is incorrect, not appropriate for Wikipedia, etc). Can the contribution be tweaked for the time being? Mumps is a pretty high-impact article. I feel that all courses should have their instuctors do a final "quality control" check. I see that this is a WikiEdu supported course. I find that WikiEdu does not usually review the final edits, however, prehaps the course instructor can if we reach out? I cannot look at it this morning, but will keep it on my radar as well. Thanks for reaching out! JenOttawa (talk) 12:15, 27 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Backlog of the month
This month I'm trying out a new element of the newsletter – a backlog of the month. The WikiProject Medicine template is on the talk page of 44,944 articles, of which 18,111 have some kind of maintenance tag on them, indicating problems large or small. Each month, I'll highlight some small task to get you out of your normal editing focus and chip away at the project's massive maintenance backlogs. I'll aim for tasks that can be worked on in small chunks, perhaps on days when you can't focus on big problems, or have 15 minutes to burn at your computer.

The first backlog of the month will be the 410 medicine articles that cite no sources. These tend to be lower-traffic topics. Some just need verification that the topic actually exists, along with a quick reference. Others are best redirected to more substantial pages, or even brought to AfD. Feel free to scroll through the list for topics that interest you, or just start at the top. This feature will last as long as folks are interested enough to engage with it. If you see backlogs that would be a good fit, post them here. Thanks all, and happy referencing!

Hi JenOttawa. I'm so sorry for the late reply on your message. Yes, I am focussing on Medicine-related articles in Malay Wikipedia and started WikiProject Medicine this year. I'm working on it with another user but we don't really have enough member in the team, so I'm working on them bit by bit with him. May I help you? WikiProject Medicine Newsletter - January 2021

Issue 8—January 2021

WikiProject Medicine Newsletter

2020 is behind us at last. Off Wikipedia, the year has been trying. On Wikipedia, I hope you've found the time you spent here fulfilling and diverting. I've taken the opportunity to place a few end-of-year statistics for reflection below. If you think of any data that would be useful to find (or begin gathering) to gauge the project's success, please let me know. With that, here is what's happening around the project:

Newly recognized content

Buruli ulcer nom. Ajpolino, my first successful FAC
Anatomical terms of location nom. Tom (LT), reviewed by ArnabSaha and Aircorn
Fish allergy nom. David notMD, reviewed by Bibeyjj
Blood culture nom. Spicy, reviewed by Graham Beards
Epidural administration nom. Berchanhimez, reviewed by Bibeyjj
Charles Bingham Penrose nom. Larry Hockett, reviewed by Esculenta

Nominated for review

  Louise Boursier nom. Doug Coldwell
Late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia nom. Maxim Masiutin
  Friedreich's ataxia nom. Akrasia25
  Kivu Ebola epidemic nom. Ozzie10aaaa
  UPMC Presbyterian nom. Andrew nyr
Crown (anatomy) nom. Bibeyjj, under review by MeegsC
Alzheimer's disease Notice of impending featured article review at talk.
Management of multiple sclerosis Notice of impending FAR at talk.
Major depressive disorder Notice of impending FAR at talk.

Year in Review
With 2020 now in the rear view mirror, a few numbers to give a sense of where our project is at: In 2020 we added a record number of medicine articles (i.e. articles with the WP:MED tag on their talk pages), starting the year with 41,243 and ending with 45,247. The ~4,000 new articles is well above the norm, presumably due to new covid-related articles. In terms of reviewed content, we added three featured articles (Dementia with Lewy bodies, Complete blood count, and Buruli ulcer), and lost three to the ravages of time, leaving our total at 66. We also added 42 newly reviewed good articles from 23 different nominators, bringing our total to 296. See a full list of reviewed content from 2020 here. Outside of reviewed content our contributions are more challenging to measure. I'm sure much our time was spent making small improvements, guiding new editors, removing junk from articles, and dealing with the raging global pandemic (on and off the site). I am interested in ways we can quantify and assess our project's progress going forward, so if anyone has ideas for other data we could find or collect, do let me know.

Other notes

  • The WMF's Community Wishlist Survey has ended. Results are posted here.
  • If you missed it, consider reading folks' thoughts on helping new editors at this recent WT:MED discussion.
  • After a quieter month at the Collaboration of the Month (Dexamethasone), we'll be taking this month off. The COTM will return in February. Propose and vote on nominations here.
  • Thanks to all who helped deal with last month's backlog, medicine articles that cite no sources. 28 down, 382 to go. We'll pick a new backlog next month. In the meantime, for any interested, I've posted an updated list of articles that lack sources here.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Cochrane/Cochrane Review List

edit

ow Hi JenOttawa. I was wondering on the updates and percentages in table. Is that manually done by you? The calculations and etc in the table. Looking forward for your reply. Thanks. WAqil (talk) 07:49, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Dear @WAqil: thank you for reaching out. The percentages in the table and 52 lists of reviews to consider are updated by me, yes. We run a code that compares Cochrane Reviews published in the past 10 years with what is on different languages of Wikipedia and generates a csv table and a set of .txt files with the updated review lists. This is run quarterly. For the update list, we have an amazing volunteer who runs the Cochrane Bot for us that generates this list (and archives the "done" list). If you have any specific questions or need more information please let me know. Suggestions are always welcome too! Thanks again, JenOttawa (talk) 11:48, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
I ran this data on Malay Wikipedia earlier this week as well to share! I there were about 90 Cochrane Reviews published in the past 10 years that are presently shared on Malay Wikipedia. JenOttawa (talk) 11:51, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
JenOttawa  May I know how you fetch the data of Cochrane reviews that's in Malay Wikipedia articles? I'm working on the table in Malay version. Is it pucblicly accessible? Would be glad if it did because I have no idea on how to calculate reviews the already have in articles. WAqil (talk) 13:08, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi @WAqil: I did not set up the coding myself so I would have to ask the individual who set it up. I am generating a Malay-Cochrane-Wikipedia summary table in excel and had planned to email it to the group from Cochrane Malaysia this week with an offer to provide the raw files on a quarterly basis. Do you want to touch base for a quick call to coordinate our efforts? I can send you an email!JenOttawa (talk) 13:39, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia

edit

Dear fellow editor,

I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.

All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.

Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.

I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).

The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

Moving this to my talk

edit

Thanks for the "thank you" note re my "Malaria Talk" page comments, Jen! (You could delete this reply when you have read it so that it doesn't mess up your "Talk" page!) IdleMan (talk) 13:44, 25 July 2023 (UTC) JenOttawa (talk) 13:58, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note @IdleMan:. If you have a chance to collect those references, post them on the Malaria talk page and I can try to help go through them one by one. Have a great week! JenOttawa (talk) 14:00, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Just an "observation": the organism that causes malaria is a parasite (as opposed to a virus). Have a good forthcoming weekend. IdleMan (talk) 01:26, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Vitamin E nominated for GA

edit

I recently nominated Vitamin E for GA, so any look-at/improvments you might do prior to the start of the GA review would be appreciated. David notMD (talk) 15:03, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

It is great to hear from you! What is your time frame for this work?I just made a few minor adjustments to B6 to try to improve clarity in the lead. I know that you do an amazing job with many of these articles! JenOttawa (talk) 15:26, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi again @David notMD: do you mind reviewing this edit? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vitamin_E&diff=1252262578&oldid=1251525633 JenOttawa (talk) 15:32, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@David notMD: I need to log off for the day. Let me know how I did with the reference citing, I am horrible at GAs for this reason. I find the lead very technical. Is a criteria of FA to have it in clear language for people without a background in med/science? If so I could help with some clear language adjustments in a few days. Have a great rest of your weekend in the meantime :) JenOttawa (talk) 15:38, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I moved the sentence to first sentence. The article already had Office Dietary Supplements as a ref. David notMD (talk) 02:21, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @David notMD:. Looking great. How was the order of the sections chosen? For GAs do we usually follow MED:MOS? If so, would this be a 'drug, tx, device' or is this a bit of a hybrid because it is about a vitamin? In that case medical uses/contrindications moved up? I think that the medical uses could do with a really well written summary and then the information that is presently shared could be combined into themes and shared more effectively. I am not sure that I have the capacity to tackle right now. Let me know what you think about this idea. I will wait to hear back. JenOttawa (talk) 17:21, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Over years, I favored having sections in same order across all the vitamin articles. I will eyeball the article with your suggestions in mind. For background, I had nominated this back in 2022 but then abandoned the GA because of the extensive comments from the reviewer. This fall, i began to address those comments and then recently resubmitted. David notMD (talk) 23:34, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good! I took a stab at a summary paragraph. Feel free to revert and re work or make as many changes as you think are best! I am signing off for the night.@David notMD: JenOttawa (talk) 01:06, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Again, the article already has the Health Professionals version of Office of Dietary Supplements (ref #3) so please do not add the ODS Consumers version. David notMD (talk) 10:46, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Pneumothorax, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Chronic lung disease. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Retinal Detachment Article

edit

Hi! I am a fourth-year medical student participating in the WikiProject Medicine course at UCSF. I noticed that you recently made some edits to the "Retinal Detachment" article, which I am also planning to update. I’ve shared my analysis and proposed changes in the talk section of the article, and I would greatly appreciate it if you could review them when you have the opportunity, given your expertise and experience with this article. Thank you! Ss444431 (talk) 19:43, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dear Ss444431 thank you so much for the message. I just checked out the talk page for your plan on Retinal detachment. It is hard for me to provide feedback as I have not seen the sources that you are planning to use. If you provide a few examples of suggestions for improvements (ie paraphrased information from high quality secondary sources such as review articles) it would be helpful for me and I can provide more specific feedback. I am not in the field to be able to identify gaps in the article. If you have any other questions or ideas please reach out at anytime! Good luck with your project. It is great to see these articles being kept up to date by people in the medical fields.JenOttawa (talk) 21:27, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
