Heartland New Zealand Party
editThe information contained in the post regards the Heartland New Zealand Party is incorrect. I am the party secretary for the Heartland New Zealand party. Mr Harry Mowbray has no affiliation to the Heartland New Zealand Party and the party is not anti the environment. The edits that I made to this page were a true reflection of the Heartland New Zealand Party and those things that the party stands for as shown on the Heartland New Zealand Party website[1].--ALoader (talk) 02:34, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
- If Stuff has details wrong, please take it up with them. We go by independent and reliable sources, and Stuff is generally accurate. Alternatively, you could find an alternate reliable source and post a link to it on the article talk page. Unfortunately, we cannot take the party's own website as an independent and reliable source as all political parties are in the business of promoting themselves.
- Since you are the party secretary, you should not be editing any article about the party. I have already given a link to our conflict of interest guidelines on your talk page.-gadfium 02:44, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for macronising wētā!
editJust noticed you're on a roll fixing all the wētā usages in Wikipedia – thanks so much! When I was looking through references I found a variety of spellings in published papers – wetas, weta, and wētā – and some researchers regrettably still aren't using macrons. Perhaps even Weta Workshop will make a change now... —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 06:51, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks are due from me, too. Just for fun, I've grabbed one of the Weta logos that you wouldn't be able to copyright and added the missing macrons to it. Any thoughts what creative ideas this could be used for? Schwede66 08:01, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Regarding chess player pages
editHi Gadfium. Unfortunately again some changes are being made to chess players pages , this time Kasparov , as far as highlighting his standing in ches history. I suspect this is done becuase the person doing this favours other players (i.e Fischer) and is trying to minimize other great players like Kasparov and Carlsen. The point of contention is about whether "greatest of all time" should be on Kasparov's page , this has been there for ages and has never bothered anyone until now. There is even a reference from a very well respected chess historian backing it up but apparently that's not enough. exxcalibur808 —Preceding undated comment added 14:35, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Millers Flat
editHello Gadfium. The details in para 3 of this entry are not, in my opinion, historically accurate which is why I attempted to correct this with an amendment. Some of the information about the identity of the body is contained in the coroner's report of a drowning. This report is held by Archives NZ <ref> R24258546 (From: W L Simpson, Justice of the Peace, Mount Benger Date: 8 March 1865 Subject: Inquest proceedings, man unknown, supposed to be Charles Alms ACGS 16211 48/ah 1865/314) <ref>. This is not accurately represented in the present wording which is speculative as to the identity and disposal of the body, and ignores other information concerning the name of the deceased. Th role of the local community in the legend of the "lonely graves" also needs to be highlighted. In many ways discussion on the possible identity of the body is a distraction. Maybe I should attempt a rewording of the 3rd paragraph, with appropriate references, for you to consider? BarachZ (talk) 01:33, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- You are welcome to correct the article, using the inquest results, but you need to be careful to stick to what the sources actually say, rather than putting your own interpretation of them. Since the inquest is well out of copyright, I see no problem with you quoting it in the article, and that would be helpful to others who don't have access to the archives.
- If you want someone to assist you with editing the article, I suggest someone more local than I would be appropriate. The existing content was added by an anonymous editor in 2009, so we can't ask them. @Grutness: may be willing, or able to suggest someone else.-gadfium 02:36, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- I'll certainly have a look over you edits to the article... though Miller's Flat's not an area I know that much about (I'm much more familiar with the area between Dunedin and Milton). Grutness...wha? 03:23, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Coolest cities
editHi Gadfium, I read your message regarding the deletion of statements about coolest cities in the southern hemisphere. What feature did i get wrong about Auckland? Please elaborate on your contention.
The reason why Auckland, Bloemfontien, Santiago, and Maseru all vie for coldest capital cities in the southern hemisphere is that it depends on whether you are looking at average daily temp, highs, lows, monthly mean maximums/minimums, or all-time records. Each of these cities wins in one of these parameters.
As with the source, the source is the temperature data on the city articles themselves, which I also cross-checked with climate graphs of weatherspark.com. So what should be the convention of citing in this case?
Lastly, I think being the coldest capital city in the southern hemisphere is an interesting fact. It is not mentioned in any other article, but it is notable enough that this information should be made available in a public encyclopedia like Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Firth m (talk • contribs) 02:16, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Firth m: see WP:OR for why you cannot combine multiple sources to make a claim like this. As to what you got wrong with Auckland, I alluded to it in my edit summary. Auckland hasn't been the capital of New Zealand since 1865.-gadfium 03:03, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Gadfium: Oops, yes, good point that Auckland is not the capital. I should have said "city" rather than "capital". On the point of coldest cities in the Southern Hemisphere, if we can prove via public weather records what cities are the coldest, and cite such data, can we then include such information in Wikipedia? If no one has written an article explicitly about the topic outside Wikipedia, how can this information be brought to the public?

That slogan might be acceptable if the local business association uses it, in which case we would add a line such as "The local business association promotes Ashhurst with the slogan ...", but we must have a suitable source. You are also trying to add this to the wrong article, Ashurst which is a disambiguation page which links to several places, including Ashhurst. John Logan Campbell Link
editHi. I included Whanganui Island not Coromandel in the link partly because the Whanganui Island has the detail of his stay - and the Coromandel page does not. Also Coromandel didn't exist at the time so his visit to it would have been difficult. Whoever looks at Coromandel is going to see nothing. I would have though just quietly directed the reader to Whanganui Island was ideal - No? So what would you suggest then? Is this entry better on the authors talk page or the article talk page? I have never been able to work out what the protocol is. If I used the Article Talk site how would you know that I had edited it ( unless you had bt chance starred it?LawrieM (talk) 21:11, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- @LawrieM:The two problems with your edit were that first, it was unsourced, and I didn't see any support for it looking at a couple of other biographies of Campbell, and secondly, if a reader clicks on a link called "Coromandel", they would expect to be taken to either the article on Coromandel town or the one on Coromandel peninsula. WP:EASTEREGG explains this in more detail.
- What I would like you to do is to include a source for Campbell arriving at Whanganui Island. I see that at Whanganui Island there is a reference to Whanganui Island, a History: The Town that Never was, but this looks like a self-published book and might not meet our standards at WP:Reliable sources. You give a page number, but not which edition you are using (I can get a copy of either the first edition 1999, or the revised edition of 2007, but these are from different sources). In particular, I would like to see what citation the book gives to support its material. Once the source is established, the link should be direct to Whanganui Island.
- It's fine to post here, but you could also have posted at Talk:John Logan Campbell.
- I have asked you a related question at your talk page on Wikimedia Commons.-gadfium 02:57, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Response
editHi. I have added in the extra reference now. How does that look? As regards Piesse being " Self Published" - not sure why that is a problem. The booklet includes 27 separate detailed bibliographies, 3 notes, 1 certificate of Title and 4 maps.
- I'm happy with that extra reference. I made a minor alteration to your citation. If you wish to restore your edit to John Logan Campbell, please add this citation, and perhaps for clarity you could say he arrived at Beeson's Island (now called Whanganui Island), or similar. The source says he went to Wellington Harbour before sailing to the Hauraki Gulf, so I suggest you remove the word "first" which suggests that was his initial landing place in New Zealand.-gadfium 04:37, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Performing Arts Aotearoa - Wiki Project – funding success
editGreat news. The Wikimedia Foundation gave me the grant for the Performing Arts Aotearoa Wiki-Project. It starts on 17 May 2021 and runs for four months. Thanks for being a volunteer or endorsing it.
Go to the project page for guidance on starting to contribute as an editor. Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Pakoire/Performing_Arts_Aotearoa_-_Wiki_Project
I will update this project page regularly plus send out weekly updates. The focus of this grant is on quality content on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. I encourage you to go in-depth and reach out for hints about where to get resources. There is heaps available on-line. Reach out with problems eg. Categories etc
There will be three formal edit-a-thons in Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin. Dates to be confirmed.
You can email me at any time [email protected] or message me on my talk page.
My focus once the project starts will be on getting resources available for editors from organisations, and educating people in organisations on what Wiki platforms are and how and why they can be engaged. Pakoire (talk) 07:46, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
TheAmoebaSisters
editHello, Gadfium. I reviewed your recent comment on my talk page and am searching to look through your perspective. I thank you very much for commenting because then I can alter my behaviour when I recieve a constructive comment. I did not realise that the article etiquette encompassed such things and am glad you have brought it up with me. I will refrain from re-adding the symbol to the New Plymouth page although I cannot promise to do so for every article. I would like to be able to add my own work, no mater how small and if you really do disagree you can add a comment to my talk page. Thank you for your concern. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheAmoebaSisters (talk • contribs) 01:42, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

- Consensus was reached to deprecate Wikipedia:Editor assistance.
- Following a Request for Comment the Book namespace was deprecated.
- Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.
- After a Clarification request, the Arbitration Committee modified Remedy 5 of the Antisemitism in Poland case. This means sourcing expectations are a discretionary sanction instead of being present on all articles. It also details using the talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard to discuss disputed sources.
That's not what Euronesian means ?
editEuronesian is a portmanteau word used in Samoa to describe all the people that are not 100% Samoans. It includes "European" but also Chinese origins (or Black American). The proper word for Chinese (mixed) doesn't exist. During the colonial time, Mongoloid was used during census. But now, the official use is only "General Electorate" (they elect 2 MPs at Fono). --RotachZ (talk) 08:35, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- You will need sources.-gadfium 08:37, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- I like very much this kind of reply (without any notification, by the way). There is not one solid source in Euronesian article. As usual. My source is the law of Samoa. Alex Rose is a typical Euronesian, he will bear the Samoan flag at the next Summer Olympics.--RotachZ (talk) 08:40, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
Auckland Grammar Notable Staff
editHello, Gadfium. I saw the recent edits you have made to the page about the Notable Staff. The reason as in to why they do not have pages is because if I try to make a page everytime it goes onto auto-deletion. Therefore, it is a hassle. Here in New Zealand or among the auckland/international spectrum they are well known and notable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NZDF1985 (talk • contribs) 19:04, 17th July 2021 (NZST)
- @NZDF1985: I don't see any indication that you've attempted to create articles on those people, but I looked at the article you created on Tim O'Connor, and I'm not surprised that it was deleted because it had no sources at all. I suggest you try creating articles in the Draft namespace, or in your sandbox, and you then have a chance to develop them before requesting they be moved to article space.-gadfium 07:13, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

- Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.

- An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.
- Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)
- Following an amendment request, the committee has clarified that the Talk page exception to the 500/30 rule in remedy 5 of the Palestine-Israel articles 4 case does not apply to requested move discussions.
- You can vote for candidates in the 2021 Board of Trustees elections from 4 August to 17 August. Four community elected seats are up for election.

Marotiri - why are four rocks significant?
editHello, old friend!
Have you read my comment on Talk:Marotiri? France, indeed! If you agree, maybe you have enough clout to be able to change a few relevant pages. Robin Patterson (talk) 23:52, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
- I didn't see your comment; I don't watchlist every article I edit. I tend to agree that the community of 327 people with a primary school and a statistical area with over 2,000 people named after it is of more significance that 4 rocks in an isolated area. To make a case for the primary topic would require doing a few internet searches, and the rock article, having been on Wikipedia since 2005, might still win as the better known use of the name. I don't think it's worth the time to make the case. I've added a hatnote to the rock article. The Gisborne mountain doesn't have an article as far as I'm aware, so no hatnote is needed for the locality.-gadfium 00:43, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- When I come across those things, I usually simply move the article that's hogging the primary topic and use the empty spot for a dab page. But I do check pageviews first, and whilst that's not the be and end all, in this case it does favour the rocks, I'm afraid. Schwede66 00:58, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
I just requested semi-protection for this page in the light of the attention it is currently attracting. You may want to keep an eye on it in the meantime. 10mmsocket (talk) 09:02, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, and for your edit to make the page more neutral. Having made two reverts, I'm not planning on taking further action on the page tonight.-gadfium 09:12, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Aotearoa Daylight Time
editI think the name of Aotearoa Standard Time and Aotearoa Daylight Time are really cool name to me; as second official and alternative name to the New Zealand Standard Time and New Zealand Daylight Time respectively. Nathkogashiwa (talk) 05:27, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
- You can't just make up new names for timezones on Wikipedia. You are welcome to write to the New Zealand Government and suggest your new names. If they adopt the names, then of course Wikipedia will cover them.-gadfium 05:42, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
I will say, Wellington, Aotearoa. Isn't acceptable? Cuz I like it as alternative.
