Hi there Furrykef. I noticed your work on fingerpicking, and the guitar wikibook (good work by the way!), so was wondering if perhaps you can answer a question for me... I fingerpick, but seem to have taught myself an unorthodox style in which I use my pinky finger for the 1st string (thus my ring finger for 2nd, middle for 3rd, index for 4th and my thumb for 5th and 6th). I somehow got it into my head when I was learning that this would be more efficient, as with all fingers in use I might be able to one day do some more complex picking... Hmm.
Have you heard of this style of picking before? Do you know why the pinky is not usually used? --Chopchopwhitey 02:06, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
This is actually very close to the way I fingerpick (at least when I play "Money for Nothing", the song I play most often as it's the first I learned), though I'll pick differently for different songs based on what strings I use most often, whether or not I use the whammy bar, and whether or not I'll need to do any tapping. I think the pinky is often unused because it's easier to play properly if the hand is supported, which is what the pinky is doing. There are lots of other places the pinky can be placed if you need to use the first string but don't want to pluck it with the pinky...e.g., the pickguard, the side of a pickup (the way I often do it on a Les Paul for some reason; wish I actually owned one), or gripping the side of the whammy bar (my favorite "alternate place" for it since it can open up a world of techniques). --Furrykef 04:20, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- I'll just butt in and say it's pretty common among people who do a lot of hybrid picking when they do straight finger picking. -- Jim Regan 04:23, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- Wow. People would read this thing without having something in mind to post first? --Furrykef 07:46, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- Read what? I saw no articles mentioning hybrid picking. (I added some, along with some info about thumb and finger picks to the fingerpicking article). -- Jim Regan 08:22, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- I meant my talk page. :) --Furrykef 08:38, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- Well, I'll just play dumb and say you didn't specifically mention hybrid picking :-P I'll blame insomnia while I'm at it too. And the phase of the moon. And... -- Jim Regan 09:13, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- I meant my talk page. :) --Furrykef 08:38, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks guys... good to know I'm not out there on my own in a world of strange and unfortunate fingerpicking. So now my new question is: what's hybrid picking and what's straight finger picking? --Chopchopwhitey 07:52, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- Well, I added some info to fingerpicking, but in brief hybrid picking means using both a pick and fingers. -- Jim Regan 08:22, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
Nice work, Jim...I think now my user page needs a section called "Articles I created but am no longer the primary contributor to" ;) --Furrykef 08:45, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
- Pfft. If that doesn't include all of them after a while, you might want to pinch yourself :-D -- Jim Regan 09:13, 22 May 2004 (UTC)

How to input a macron

Edits to poker pages
Thanks for correcting the typo on Chris Moneymaker. Your edit to Amarillo Slim was confusing though, as you changed the link from 2004 to As of 2004, which is a redirect to 2004. CryptoDerk 22:29, Sep 16, 2004 (UTC)

Phil Hellmuth
Convention is to use the most common name for a person. Phil Hellmuth is the most common name, and we have no articles that would otherwise get in the way of the article being named according to convention. CryptoDerk 07:27, Sep 27, 2004 (UTC)
Speedy deletion
I disagree with this point of view because admins and RC Patrol need to know the full history of a particular IP address should any vandalism continue. Deleting anon user talk pages should be the exception rather than the rule. This I have brought up for discussion at Wikipedia talk:Candidates for speedy deletion but I have yet to receive a definitive answer. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 08:04, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions to any [[U.S. state]], county, or city article as described below:
- {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" with "{{MultiLicensePD}}". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)
Calm down
hey:
Regarding your most recent edit-comment on Super Mario World, there's no reason to get angry over vandalism, as long as the wiki policy stands, it will happen.
If you get angry, they will only find it amusing and keep up that practice, tho it doesn't mean if we leave it it will stop.
However, i do find that the wiki policy in anyone can edit to be both a strength and a weakness, as vandalism will surely stain the credibility of any page.
In the meanwhile, we'll just have to revert those vandalisms. LG-犬夜叉 09:32, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
- I wasn't angry, just annoyed. I seem to be getting annoyed too much here at Wikipedia lately; many of my latest edit comments aren't very nice, which is why I've been leaving the summary blank much of the time (even though I'm not supposed to). - furrykef (Talk at me) 10:36, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)
As of
I was reverting the misinformation that Deeceevoice had inserted into the article. Your nit-picking minor change got caught in the crossfire. Too bad; no need to go postal over it. -- CYD

Hey. It was an inadvertent slip, which I've corrected. In describing Melanin Theory in black supremacy, I inadvertently used "superconductor" in place of "semiconductor." See the article's discussion page. deeceevoice 13:01, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Creatures Wiki
Hi there! I ran across your Creatures 3 guide - we've set up a Creatures Wiki that's going well - it's currently the Featured Wiki over at Wikicities - and I was wondering if you'd like to contribute anything to it. We don't have much in the way of "user guides" right now, so I think your input would be valuable, if you have the time to spare. :-) GreenReaper 23:24, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Hmm, that's a bit sneaky, first editing metaprogramming to change the context of the link and then submitting the linked page to vfd :-P Especially since I'm sort of on forced wikivacation due to the extreme slowness of the wiki.
Hmm, perhaps it just looks that way. Either way it's fine by me, just, well, sneaky perhaps. :-P
Anyway, I've now replied to your comments on talk:Compiler metaprogramming example, though perhaps running this discussion per email or irc and then reporting back on the wiki might be more productive, since it's still extremely slow for me.
I hope to hear from you soon!

Game wiki
Wouldn't you know, I just got done entering about 50 NES games into Wikipedia, and now I find out about the game wiki. Hmm, is there any way the two wikis can benefit each other? i.e., how to avoid accidental duplication of work? Rad Racer 04:11, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Well, of course Wikipedia can cross-reference the game wiki through "external links", and already does so for a couple of the games. To link to a gameinfo page, just use the form [[Wikicities:c:games:NAME OF PAGE]] -- a bit contorted, I know. I wouldn't worry too much about accidental duplication of work, since an encyclopedia and a game site will tend to have a different focus on the article. - furrykef (Talk at me) 04:36, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)
SNES Shadowrun
Hi. I appreciate your help in the article I was working on. First off, I didn't know how to do the bulleting thing you did. I was using the BR tage. The asterisks are much nicer. ALso, I wanted to put the spoiler warning but I didn't know how to do that, although I had seen it done before. Thanks. Perhaps the article is a bit... extensive, but I wanted to create it like this since it was one of my favorite games and I have found very few sites out there that contain a good amount of information on the game. That game sure was ahead of its time, and I hope that other Shadowrun (SNES) enthusiasts can get something out of this. Perhaps I will write a walkthrough at the end. Once again, I appreciate your help with it. I wouldn't have been able to figure out the formatting, etc on my own! Ernie.
PS: Is the game Wiki new? Can my SNES Shadowrun article be copied and/or transferred over there?
Adminship
If I were to nominate you for adminship, would you accept? I've taken an in-depth look at your contributions and think you're an ideal candidate. CryptoDerk 21:29, Apr 18, 2005 (UTC)
- I'd probably accept, but I never really bothered asking because I'm not really sure I'm an "ideal" candidate. Most of my contributions are annoying little typo corrections (you'll notice I often leave the edit history blank, which I'm not supposed to do, because it gets tiring typing "typo" or "rm comma" or whatever time after time), and I'm not sure I set a good example. I get a little irritated at times (especially after having corrected one typo too many for the day), and one time I was all up in arms because of the way templates were being handled in MediaWiki 1.3 and I was too stubborn to change how I was using them in Wikibooks. Finally, I doubt I'd really use the powers of sysophood very much. I certainly wouldn't abuse them, though. But I'd probably just do the occasional "knock out the redirect that's in the way" kind of thing. But if you still think I'm good for it, go ahead and nominate me. :) - furrykef (Talk at me) 22:09, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Congratulations!
Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 01:45, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

4004 layout nitpicking
Just thought I'd write to explain my rationale for leaving the layout of the Intel 4004 article roughly the way it was (hence my recent rv), and to ask if it didn't look that good anyway(?):
- The -s are there to right-justify numbers for ease of direct visual comparison, as well as to make the affected lines look more tidy
- The '*'-marked footnote at the sec's bottom should be parenthesized to make it clear it's a note and not a part of the sec proper
Your superscripting of the note-indicating asterisks may be (more) correct and better-looking than the way they were; I think I just used 'ordinary' '*'-s because they looked a little superscripted anyway, w/o any explicit 'nudging'. But I must admit I didn't check any other font than the one I get when I fire up my browser and use the default wkp skin. Please comment. --Wernher 04:32, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
(please just reply here on this page -- it's almost always better to keep a conversational thread in one place, don't you agree? --w)
- The problem with the thingies is that it will look different to different people and may well actually throw it entirely out of alignment depending on the font. The usual formatting practice is to not worry about aligning things like this, and I think it's a good idea to stay consistent about that. Also, I do prefer the superscripted asterisks, and I don't really see reason not to use them. So I reverted the changes back, if you don't mind. - furrykef (Talk at me) 04:57, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Nothing important, just wanted to thank you for correcting the mistake I made on the Thwomp page on here. I was the one who added the comment about "Thwimps", but forgot what game they were in.

FurryKef to furrykef in AIM
I read about your trouble with the unwanted capitalization of your AIM username. I had the same problem, mine being Jigschwaza before. However, using Gaim under Tools>>Accounts you can modify your screenname to proper lowercase glory. Though I still much prefer using Gaim to AIM myself, others using AIM now see me as jigschwaza. So, voilà! Problem solved.

I've been away from Wikipedia for about a month, but if it's not too late you can consider my apology. Sorry about my brittle and intemperate reply. I worded it very poorly and it didn't accurately reflect my intent. I did not mean to suggest that I own any part of WP, but rather that I think it somewhat impolite to make updates for no other reason than to reformat the source. Of course you did make some content edits which I had simply overlooked, but you hadn't mentioned the substantive edits in the edit summary -- you used the summary only to scold about a source formatting style that you don't like.
Use of linebreaks in article source is controversial, but some editors including myself find it useful at times. There's a discussion of some of the points in Don't use line breaks. If you don't like line breaks in article source, you'll hate the contributions I made to Ruy Lopez, chess opening, and a few other articles. I never reformat existing source just because I prefer a different format as presumably the original author found the format she used to be convenient, but when I add a substantial amount of new material I sometimes put each sentence on a separate line in the new paragraphs that I add. Username
Hey furreykef, it's ⇔Thunderbird⇔, from ye olde HRWiki. I haven't seen you around for a while, which is understandable, moving out of the quiet town to the Big Wiki and all, and being a sysop here no less. But I digress. My reason for contact is a simple one. We recently upgraded to Mediawiki 1.5, as I belive Wikipedia also recently did. As you are no doubt aware, it seems that 1.5 cannot handle usernames without capitalization (furreykef --> Furreykef). We've pretty much got most main users switched over, but one user that is standing out is a certain sysop. Since you're still on the roster, would you mind stepping over for a minute and participating in a short switch over system, to become Furreykef with a capitalization? It's just easier to get it over with now, so it's ready for if you ever edit the ol' Wiki again. Thanks in advance, all you gotta do is go here and let Tom know if you want it done. Then you can also switch over your userpage content after if you want. Thanks again, ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 17:49, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

- I don't mind the copying, but I think it'd be good form to cite Wikipedia (or me directly). Currently, all of gameinfo is under the GFDL only. - furrykef (Talk at me) 00:48, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
- I put a "Copied from Wikipedia" note into the edit summary, although I forgot to do it for two of them. Gerard Foley 13:14, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi there!
* hugs *
Apart from Wikipedia, it's e-mail only for me for the next few weeks. You have my address? If not, the link on my page should work. Tevildo 17:02, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- <nowiki>*</nowiki> Typical. :) Tevildo 18:42, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, and I just unindented that response, too. ;) - furrykef (Talk at me) 19:21, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
Edit Summaries
//Ae:æ 14:48, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
- I typically don't provide an edit summary for minor edits because they're so frequent that, if I felt compelled to type in an edit summary every time, I'd likely not even bother making many of the edits. (For one thing, often when I make such an edit, I find more mistakes and have to make more edits soon thereafter... if I typed in a summary, I'm less inclined to continue reading and notice and correct further mistakes.) So, for me, it's a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils -- either type in summaries less frequently, or edit less frequently. Sorry that I have to be that way, but it's just the way I am... - furrykef (Talk at me) 21:14, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
security through obscurity...
Recently, you placed a fact tag on a statement in the Security through Obscurity article (the statement referred to the fact that CS profs. often don't feel the need to prove that security through obscurity is ineffective). There isn't a good review article or such that talks about this... could you, instead, propose different wording. This is part of a larger problem with sourcing that article as there has been little formal attention to the subject. -- Joebeone (Talk) 20:38, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- It seems to me that such a statement is going to need a citation one way or another... there's just no way to say "security through obscurity is obviously wrong", no matter who's said it or how many people have said it, and remain NPOV without at least sourcing it. The Kcherkhoff's principle thing is good, as it points to a well-known principle and a source, but I feel it's not enough. To get rid of the need for the citation, we'd need to get rid of the idea that "security through obscurity is obviously wrong". But that doesn't sound like a good idea because, of course, many college professors do feel this way. - furrykef (Talk at me) 22:29, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
"Licensee" accent marks
I just thought I'd tell you... I don't know how it's spelled in French, but in English, the word "licensee" is almost never written with an accent mark (even by people who normally write accent marks). For example, www.m-w.com doesn't even list a spelling with an accent mark, even though this dictionary does often list uncommon variants (like "rôle" for "role"). So I removed the accent marks in GNU Free Documentation License. I hope you don't mind. - furrykef (Talk at me) 12:56, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- No, I don't mind. I suppose it was rather like fiancé, etc. Thanks for the correction:) --Zantastik talk 16:59, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
James Bonds
You may know this already, but one of your recent edits inspires me to pass it on. In the late 1980s, the term "James" became popular among bond traders as shorthand for the 20 year T bonds issued in 1987. Oh, those wacky bond traders. --Christofurio 14:11, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
Tonya
You should go to the official website and see. What does IMBD stand for?
- It took me a minute to remember my addition to Talk:Everybody Hates Chris. You should provide context when bringing these things up. :) IMDB stands for the Internet Movie Database. - furrykef (Talk at me) 20:08, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Oh, you're very right. I'm sorry for not making that clear. Anyway, thank you for responding and telling me what that meant. By the way, I think Everybody Hates Chris is starting kinda late for some reason at the beginning of October this year. TareTone 01:08, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
