DYK nomination of Poppy Factory

edit

Hi, I've reviewed your nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Poppy Factory and noted a couple of issues. Letting you know so you can fix them; should be a quick fix. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:06, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Poppy Factory

edit

Materialscientist (talk) 00:02, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ask yourself, in an article about hotels, do we want the word "hotel" to be upper-case when it is used as a generic noun? Do we say that because we have a phrase such as the Savoy Hotel that all mentions of hotel should be upper-case? Ericoides (talk) 09:47, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Articles looked at

edit

Well done for getting that DYK through, it was great for that Remembrance Sunday! I've had a look at the articles you suggested - your contributions are excellent. I would say, if you're looking at getting George Arthur Howson through DYK (which there's still a day left to achieve) you need to use inline citations for your referencing and maybe to expand it using another source, maybe a quick google search would throw something up. But I think this would make a great DYK, perhaps with "DYK...that George Arthur Howson was awarded the Military Cross for, despite receiving a shrapnel wound, encouraging his unit to continue repairing a road under shellfire at the Battle of Passchendaele?" or "DYK...that George Arthur Howson founded the Disabled Society, the forerunner to the modern Royal British Legion Poppy Factory?". Let me know - I can always give you a hand with this. Cheers, Zangar (talk) 16:21, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - particularly for your help (and Yngvadottir too). Unfortunately the kerfuffle at Talk:Poppy factory has taken the shine off it a bit for me.
Thanks also for the suggestion, but I'm not interested in nominating George Arthur Howson for DYK. If you have access to the source, I'd be grateful if you would let me know if I have done a good enough job at trying to separate the article from the original prose. (If/when I have time, I will also do Sir Frederick Lister.[1]) -- Ferma (talk) 18:19, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Agnew

edit

Thanks for many good amendments. However, please will you remove the wikilinks you've added in quotations. I think it's bonkers, but our MOS mandates that wikilinks cannot be included in quotes and as this is now a featured article, we have to stick very closely to MOS. Thanks again --Dweller (talk) 20:47, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Really? Wikipedia:MOSQUOTE#Linking - which is a guideline, so can have exceptions - says: As much as possible, avoid linking from within quotes, which may clutter the quotation, violate the principle of leaving quotations unchanged, and mislead or confuse the reader. If there are sensible wikilinks to make, which do not "clutter" the quotation or change its meaning or mislead the reader, then why leave them out?
Before my most recent edit to the article, there were already a few links in quotes:
The first two are in running text, rather than a blockquote: is that ok/better? If the rule of thumb is "as much as possible, avoid", then they could all be left out; I am also not entirely convinced by the scare quotes anyway, and the article seem to have a rather hearvy use of quotes for clear statements of fact or opinion - for example, aged "eight or nine" or describing him as "hysterical" - which could be done indirectly, as reported speech, without quotes. But I think almost all of these links are helpful, with the possible exception of Shropshire.
To be clear, I added links in quotes for
And I should have added one for Spiro Agnew too.
Most of these only appear once in the article and the links all add value for the reader, I think (the other "off stump" is in another quotation; perhaps the Today link could come out as it is referred to later). A reader who is not a cricket afficionado might wonder what an off stump is, and why it might be "despatched halfway towards the Leicestershire wicket-keeper", or what LBW means, or like to find some more background to understand better the cast of characters are who are referred to in the quotes. But look, it is "your" article, so feel free to strip out the links if you think it would help the reader. -- Ferma (talk) 18:22, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Because it's an FA, we have to stick firmly to MOS or have a really exceptional reason why not. If there were links in quotes before, I'll need to prune them out, sigh. Thanks. On the bigger picture, I'd love to get the MOS changed, because I think it's daft. --Dweller (talk) 19:02, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Francis Wallington edits

edit

Hi and thanks for you additions to Francis Wallington. Do you have any references for the details you have added though? Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 18:37, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Public records! Can I ask, why did you change the London Gazette references back? I picked out the exact pages for his citations: with your reversions, you have to wade through pages of other people's first. -- Ferma (talk) 18:41, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, could you provide references even if its just a title of a book so that its not thought that the information you have added is made up and so other people can follow up if the want more information.
I reverted you changed to the London Gazette references because the important information is a few pages back, IE the award and date. Otherwise it just links to his name in a list which doesn't mean anything. Having the range of page numbers covers the correct infomation, IE the awarde, date and his name in the list.
Also, just in case you are using the London Gazette for any other edits you make, you might want to use this template for your references. It has been made specifically for that purpose and its a good reminder of what you need to make a note of: <ref name="">{{London Gazette |issue= |date= |startpage= |endpage= |supp=yes/no |accessdate=}}</ref>
Thank you for being civil and not starting an edit war. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 12:42, 8 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Edit war? Why on earth would I want to do that?

For chapter and verse, you will have to get his birth, marriage and death certificates. But perhaps this is the best single online source.[2] As corroboration, this is clearly his birth,[3] and this is his marriage.[4] I can't find something quite so definitive about his death, but you can find details about their children in similar places.

Incidentally, there was a remarkable sale at auction only a few months ago of a set dress miniatures that must have belonged to Francis Wallington.[5]

On the page ranges, I understand what you mean, and I can see your point for the first MC here as you would need to navigate back from the citation here to confirm the nature of the award (the citation page itself gives the date), but I was mightily confused on clicking through expecting to see the citations, and finding myself reading about other people's awards instead. For example, this is a direct link to the citation for his third bar. That page gives you the date and type of award immediately. Why use this link to irrelevant DSO citations some pages away? Similarly, for the first and second bar, there is nothing here or here that adds to the actual citations here or here.

I've been refreshing the articles on the other three people to win four MCs, Percy Bentley (soldier), Humphrey Arthur Gilkes, and Charles Gordon Timms. Perhaps you could take a look there too? I've also looked at some of the recipients of the DSO with three bars - for example, Archibald Walter Buckle, W. R. A. Dawson, Edward Allan Wood and Edward Albert Gibbs - but there are still some that need some work - such as William Denman Croft and Robert Sinclair Knox. -- Ferma (talk) 17:50, 8 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Would you do me the courtesy of discussing any further changes you intend to make to this article? Gutting the lead as you did today simply isn't acceptable. Eric Corbett 23:07, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your message. An interesting subject, isn't it? As far as I can recall, I'd not heard of Bile Beans before a few weeks ago, when they were mentioned on "The Long View".[6] I think I have exhausted my sources now, although here are some adverts.[7][8][9] The last has neon signs in Trafalgar Square!
Sorry if I messed up the lead, but I think is actually a lot better now than it was before the second of my two edits to the article. I only moved a sentence or two which seem to fit in better in the main body of the article, and your more recent additions make it much better.
Anyway, I thought we were enjoined to "be bold" in editing? By my rough calculation, I have added about three quarters of the content to that article in my two edits, although your efficient editing has made a silk purse out of my sow's ear. I'd gladly consent to your request to discuss before making any further edits to that article - on the currently rather moribund talk page perhaps? - if you afford the same courtsey to me. -- Ferma (talk) 18:19, 13 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

No, I added free-access sources for the content I added, which also support the content that was there already, and which don't require a subscription. Oh, ok. Oh, sorry. Yes, for his father's career actually. There are other sources for his brother, such as [10] or [11] There is a bit more about Mark at [12] and [13] (the second also Google-cached because the direct link http://www.challengenews.org/rescued/ shows the wrong article).
The cached version works for me (more or less, with some typographical oddities) but the underling page at http://www.fgbuk.org/node/2103 does not seem to work any more. I suppose webcite or similar would be better. -- Ferma (talk) 22:04, 4 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the comment re the source - I think the Free Library piece is from the Racing Post, as the author is their statistician, John Randall. I changed her birthplace as I knew Fulke Walwyn was born in Wrexham and it'd be a curious pair of twins born so far apart! The list of horses on the article is a bit questionable to me, as most of the later ones (Ile de Bourbon etc) were undoubtedly trained by her son Fulke - he was the official licence holder from 1961 at a very young age but became the full trainer later on. Anyway, they were all certainly trained at the same stables, and Helen was a part-owner of Ile de Bourbon. Nice article about a pioneering lady of Flat racing. --Bcp67 (talk) 21:44, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

No, thank you for alerting me to the source. I had to follow the source I had to hand, despite the discrepancy, so thanks for clearing that up! Yes, probably the later ones were trained by her son, but I'm sure she would have had a kept involved. Perhaps we can just say that they were trained at the stables? Thanks again for your kind words. See also Priscilla Hastings and Ruth Wood, Countess of Halifax. There was much more in the ODNB so I've added some to Fulke Walwyn too. Ferma (talk) 22:02, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Robert Rinder

edit

On 1 April 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Robert Rinder, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Judge Rinder is not a judge? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Robert Rinder. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Robert Rinder), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
