Query

edit

Hello, Estopedist1,

I went to WikiProject Estonia with a question, saw that the talk page wasn't very active but that you had responded to some questions and thought I'd come directly to you.

We have a very new editor, Montenois, who is doing a lot of work in the area of Estonian politics and political history. I encountered them because they emptied out a lot of categories, instead of making a proposal at WP:CFD, and so I had to revert some of their edits where they recategorized people by geography.

I'm not sure of what subject areas interest you on the project but I was hoping that someone who knew more than I about Estonia could check out this highly active new editor and make sure they were going in a positive direction (meaning that I won't have to do a whole lot more of reverting!). Or, since you are a long-time editor here, you also might know of another editor who is also interested in Estonian political history who might make this new editor's acquaintance and maybe invite them to participate in the WikiProject. Thanks, in advance, for any guidance you can provide. Liz Read! Talk! 22:48, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Liz: What relates to Estonia topic, it seems that user:Montenois' goal is to improve categorizing at Category:People from the Governorate of Livonia. It seems to be OK. Liz, could you please specify which categories have been emptied by Montenois? Eg if I see reverting at Special:Diff/1063814321, I cannot understand it. Just in case, I am pinging some Estonia activists @Flying Saucer, H2ppyme, and ExRat:--Estopedist1 (talk) 08:35, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I can answer that directly. The only categories which I did empty were ones related to those Latvian municipalities which ceased to exist six months ago. As those familiar with Latvia know, that country underwent a rather radical administrative reform on 1 July 2021, when the number of first-level administrative units went down from 119 to a mere 43. This obviously meant that a very large number of Wikipedia pages on Latvian geography-related topics became partially outdated. The Latvian-language Wikipedia has more or less caught up with the changes, but as things seem to move much slower on the English-language Wikipedia in matters relating to Latvia, I decided to start updating the info on Latvian municipalities and articles relating to them. This involved moving localities and persons from those categories which became obsolete on 1 July 2021 to the correct categories. For example, as Aloja Municipality ceased to exist on 1 July 2021 and its territory was merged to Limbaži Municipality, the obvious thing to do is to is to update the info, including moving people from the newly-obsolete category "People from Aloja Municipality" to the correct one, "People from Limbaži Municipality". This has, of course, the inevitable effect of emptying the newly-obsolete categories. I had no idea that anyone would think of that as a controversial move, because as far as I understand, updating outdated information is something that should be done immediately as one notices it. That Aloja Municipality (and many more) ceased to exist on 1 July is not a matter of opinion but a fact, and editors should be able to update the info accordingly. As most of the info on the English-language wikipedia regarding Latvian municipalities is still outdated, I greatly suspect that Liz wasn't aware of the fact that those Latvian municipalities had recently ceased to exist and that I in fact had a very good reason to move the persons and the localities to their correct categories. She no doubt thought that I had engaged on some kind of random category-emptying rampage for no evident reason and acted accordingly, which had the effect of creating some collateral damage, as she also reverted a large number of edits which had nothing to do with those newly-obsolete Latvian municipality categories which I had in fact emptied for the reason stated above. This collateral damage concerned mostly Estonia-related articles. I was somewhat puzzled when I discovered this, because I couldn't understand what this had to do with the stated reason (emptying categories). As far as I can remember, I haven't been emptying any Estonia-related categories and I haven't seen any reason to do so, as Estonian administrative categories aren't outdated. Montenois (talk) 10:12, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I am not so sure about Latvian categories either. I am facing a similar problem for Ukraine, and it looks to me that the best way to specifically discuss categories is to open a dedicated discussion. I will try to do it today or tomorrow and post a link at your talk page. Please for the time being do not empty categories, even if they have to be emptied we have a dedicated process for this.--Ymblanter (talk) 11:50, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia talk:Categories for discussion#Categories pertaining to former administrative divisions--Ymblanter (talk) 19:51, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • @Liz: I have noticed that many of user:Montenois' edits have actually improved the categorization of the Estonian subjects. Many edits that were reverted also stripped away a lot of valuable information to articles that Montenois added that had improved the articles. Apart from the categories that Montenois added, in many cases they have also done a good job on many Estonian articles clarifying places of birth, political parties, dates, etc., and all seem to check out with when I have looked into the edits. However, all of those good edits were also lost when reverted. I am unsure what categories specifically are allegedly being emptied, as there would still be container categories for the new categories being created? I can't help too much with Latvian topics, but I am guessing that they are doing similar work with those categories and topics. ExRat (talk) 13:56, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

"Infoclutter"

edit

Hi Estopedist. You have repeatedly deleted image parameters with edit summaries such as "the fewer infoclutter, the better encyclopedia". I would like to ask you what Wikipedia policy/policies you are trying to implement here? Tammbecktalk 13:24, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Tammbeck: parameter "upright" is redundant and subjective. Parameter "center" is redundant and subjective. Parameter "left" disturbs the outlook of a page, and should be avoided whenever possible. Parameter "right" is redundant, because default already is "right"--Estopedist1 (talk) 13:31, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think you're partially correct but a quick google search found the guidelines on extended image syntax, eg WP:PICSIZE, to be extant. I think we should all agree to try and follow the actual guidelines here. Tammbecktalk 13:45, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
(watching, ec:) I agree that "right" is default and can go, and "left" should be reserved to the few cases where a subject looks to the right and the image left doesn't displace the next header. But why would "upright" be subjective when an upright image would be given prominence objectively by being larger when not marked "upright"? I'd also understand "center" which is used standard in infoboxes. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:47, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Tammbeck and Gerda Arendt: I'm quite sure that parameters like "upright=2.1", "upright=3.1", "upright=0.9" and etc numbers deter editors. These numbers are setted randomly. There are very few cases where parameter "upright" improves the quality, because if you want to see quality you click on the file itself and see it in Wikimedia Commons--Estopedist1 (talk) 16:34, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I disagree. Firstly, I meant just saying "upright" for images that are not landscapes. Secondly, if you have images with rich detail, seeing them in normal size is not inviting to even click. When an image contains something written, there's a minimum size of that script to be visible without an extra click. When the article subject is a painting, I want to see it in a way that I can decide to read the article or not. Please handle these things as you like for articles you write, but leave other articles alone. Suggestions on the talk page are fine, also obvious "mistakes" such as a left image that's better right. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:18, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Estopedist. I hope you can rememeber that "(s)he was born in" is correct, not "is born". Pelmeen10 (talk) 17:37, 15 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Pelmeen10: I have used the phrase "is born in" if the human is still living; otherwise "was born in"--Estopedist1 (talk) 18:13, 15 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
It is always "was born", even if the person is alive. Pelmeen10 (talk) 18:19, 15 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Native English speaker here. It's always "was born". Past/present tense may vary in some other cases. E.g. "he lives in Estonia" is for somebody who is alive; "he lived in Estonia" could be somebody alive who has moved somewhere else, or somebody who is dead (and whose last place of residence before death may or may not have been Estonia). About pic of Neatostema

edit

Hello,

By clicking on the page of the botanical genus Neatostema, I saw the photo of this plant and I think that it is another family, that of the Brassicaceae (Alyssum simplex, probably this group). And not Neatostema. What do you think ? I don't know how to change the name of the photo, I think it's important to change it.

Thanks, Quentin45 (talk) 16:38, 18 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Might be worth involving Plantdrew - he's our resident plant expert... Tammbecktalk 15:00, 18 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Plantdrew could you help please? Estopedist1 (talk) 15:01, 18 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
I've replaced the image. The image that was being used didn't depict the same plant as the other images on Commons. I'm not familiar with Neatostema, but the image I selected as a replacement is definitely the right family (Boraginaceae), and was uploaded by somebody who claims to be a botanist, so I assume they've got the genus/species ID correct.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it!

In the article Realization (figured bass), the audio file of Johann Kirnberger's realisation of Bach's BWV 1079 used to work perfectly well for more than two years — until you fiddled with it on Wikipedia Commons. It's not strange. It has to do with your changes on Wikipedia Commons. Fix those by reverting to what it was before you interfered with it. Leave the page Realization (figured bass) alone, for heaven's sake.Ttocserp 16:34, 18 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
On 18 June 2022 at 06:41 on Commons you deleted File:Johann_Kirnberger's_BWV_1079_rAdagio_ealization.ogg (which worked perfectly), and replaced it by one of your own devising (that doesn't work).
Does this concern you in any way? Are you going to fix it? Are you perhaps going to reply to this message?Ttocserp 21:38, 18 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ttocserp everything is restored and is working well. You probably realise that former file name "Commons:File:Johann Kirnberger's BWV 1079 rAdagio ealization.ogg" is invalid. Please give me a screenshot or explain what is wrong at the moment? Estopedist1 (talk) 02:38, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
No, it is not working. (1) Open the article Realization (figured bass). (2) Go to Example 13 and attempt to play the audio file. It will not play, but will displays an X. That means the program is calling an .ogg file that has been corrupted.
The person who corrupted the file was you, by deciding it was "invalid" and deleting it. A file that works is not invalid, even if the spelling offends somebody's aesthetic sense. Please stop being disingenuous, and fix it.Ttocserp 07:32, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Ttocserp Example 12 is working perfectly. Try to open this article in another PC. Very likely the problem is purging or WP:NULLEDIT Estopedist1 (talk) 06:53, 20 June 2022

Imprecis edit history comment on an AWB edit to Vingis Park

edit

With this Revision as of 07:53, 8 November 2021 to Vingis_Park you added a comment "unreferenced wikifying, replaced: |right| → | (2), {{reflist → {{Reflist"

Several points here. I am not sure what the AWB search was, but this article is and was at the time referenced. Your edit made no substantial changes to the references. AWB allows a user to overide the semi-automated edit history comment and in this case you should have done so explaining what the edit did.

The AWB edit made two types of edit. The first was to change the settings of the images. As such images had been custom set by someone, if you are making a bold change then you ought to have mentioned the changes in the edit comment. Secondly all the other changes made no difference to the apperance of the article, and it is questionable if they ought to be made at all. For example what is the advantage of "Reflist" over "reflist"?

As all the changes were superficial and the reason for the semi-automated AWB edit is neither clear or substantive this is possibly a case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Also please archive the older entries on your talk page because it is way too large, and may hinder other editor's ability to comment here.

PBS (talk) 17:02, 28 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

@PBS thanks for the comment! Yep, a bit sloppy AWB edit, but quite old one, and my newer AWB edits are better ones. Wikifying means also that image syntax "right" and "random pixels" were removed. I am using Reflist with capitalized R, if others template (like Commons category, Coord, Stub) are also with the capitalized letters. So there is logical harmony in an article Estopedist1 (talk) 18:38, 28 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • It is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. (See section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Wikipedia has standards for the minimum necessary information to be included in short articles; you can see these at Wikipedia:Stub. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Rollback granted

edit

Hi Estopedist1. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or RedWarn.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Page mover granted

edit

Hello, Estopedist1. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Useful links:

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! Salvio giuliano 12:53, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Category:Shopping centres in Estonia

edit

Hello, Estopedist1,

Please do not move category pages. The Wikipedia bots don't automatically recategorize all of the contents of a category when you manually move a page so you can't move a category like you would move an article or draft page. If you believe a category should be retitled, you need to make a nomination at Categories for Discussion. CFD is used for all category deletions, renames and merges. There is a speedy rename at CFD you can try if it is a situation that meets speedy rename guidelines.

Once you work through CFD, if a rename is accepted, an admin or editor who works at CFD can move it to the CFD working page where the CFD bot can recategorize articles to the appropriate category page. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 00:09, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

And the same situation goes with Category:Cabinet of Lithuania. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 00:12, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

A tag has been placed on Category:Estonian culture-related lists indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! id est

edit

i.e. and id est don't mean what you seem to think. English translation: that is. What follows is an exclusive list. Therefore, "id est: Category:Economy of Lithuania" means "only Category:Economy of Lithuania".

Obviously, that isn't correct. You need to list all of the target categories.

Also, it has become pain in the neck for you only giving one example, and Marcocapelle (or me) having to complete your nomination. We and the closers are doing hundreds of these.

No closer will look at parent categories. In fact, they aren't supposed to look as they are "uninvolved".

Failure to make a complete nomination means we're not likely to support them. Without support, the closing result will be "relist" and "no consensus" wasting everyone's time.

@William Allen Simpson, I can close a discussion as upmerge and upmerge it to the parent categories if that is mentioned in the nomination.
However, it is very annoying to manually do this for all of the nominations. PLease don't leave it to others to fix your nominations. Group nominations at CFD

edit

Hi, please note that when you are nominating a group of categories in a single discussion at CFD, you should specify the section heading used on the CFD log page.

For example, the text to enter on a category page for a proposed merger is

{{subst:Cfm|ProposedName|SectionName}}

Typically, the nominator starts with just one category, and does not specify a section name. That current category name, including the prefix "Category:", becomes the section heading when you start the nomination on the CFD log page.

When you tag other categories, you should specify the SectionName parameter. If you forget to do so, you can add this later, in the 1= parameter of the {{Cfd full}} template, like this.

Adding more categories on a later day is more fiddly, because just subst'ing the template creates a link to the current day's CFD log page. Here are 2 alternative ways to do it:

  1. Subst the template as above, saving the page, and then edit the date.
  2. Edit a category page that has a CFD nomination linked to the relevant section. Copy all six lines from the CFD template. Paste that into the additional category pages to be nominated, amending as necessary e.g. the target category names for merging.

I hope this is helpful. If you need more help, feel free to ask me or Qwerfjkl. – Fayenatic London 11:44, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Fayenatic london, @Qwerfjkl: thanks. I was sloppy. Manual tagging of every individual category seems to be a bot task. I hope that in future, Twinkle will allow to do multi nominations, which tag every category in question automatically Estopedist1 (talk) 16:39, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I noticed that you aren't tagging every category in a bundled nomination which complicates the CFD closure. A bot doesn't handle this so please remember to tag every category that you include in a nomination. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 02:03, 5 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Looses project ratings

edit

Hello, by this edit it has removed the rating display from the individual project banners. The ratings should remain displayed in the project banners, even if they are from the banner shell wrapper. This is important as you do not know which projects, if any, are opted out of using the one from the wrapper. Keith D (talk) 13:55, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Keith D: could you please clarify? I don't see differences here, these "importance=" and "class=" are infoclutter for categories Estopedist1 (talk) 18:39, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
The problem is the individual project banners now do not show a rating but are blank when the ratings are removed, previously they showed a class of category and importance of N/A, with or without the fields been completed. Keith D (talk) 19:41, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

It looks like what they have done has also affected the previous versions of the page. Question about Template class

edit

Hello Estopedist1, I hope you're doing well. I just have a quick question about correct formatting for templates using WikiProject Banner Shell. I know template class is a non-mainspace class rating, but I thought you would still include it for templates on their talk page, with NA as the importance: for example,
{{WikiProject Banner Shell|1=
{{WikiProject United States |class=Template |importance=NA}
}
But is this not the correct formatting? (I know it's not but I'm not entirely sure what is) Thanks! Johnson524 (Talk!) 11:22, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Living parameter on biographical articles

edit

I've noticed that you've been adding WikiProject biography tags to a bunch of articles over the past few days, and would like to remind you to add living= parameters to the {{WikiProject Biography}} template on the corresponding talk page. The living parameter accepts two values: yes (if the subject(s) are alive), and no (if the subject(s) are dead). I see you're using AWB, so I realize it's not as easy as it looks, but, if you can, could you take the time to manually add a living parameter to some of the new templates (there are currently 145 pages in the missing living parameter backlog as I write this)? Sorry if my message sounds a little harsh — this is just a friendly message that will hopefully save biography project editors from many tedious edits . Happy editing! Clearfrienda 💬 03:27, 7 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Clearfrienda: no problem. One question: is it rational to add {{WikiProject Biography}} template to the articles about bands/musical groups. I guess that there may be problem to assess living= parameter because the bands often has short lifespan, but members of bands have long lifespan Estopedist1 (talk) 04:57, 7 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it is. Bands and other subjects that aren't necessarily one person or even a biography still qualify for WikiProject Biography because they're still describing people. The living parameter isn't about the lifespan of the band itself; rather, it's about if the article discusses living people (because then, you must be extra careful to follow WP:BLP when editing). So, even if the band has long since broken up, if any of the members are still alive and referenced in the article, it's important to add living=yes to the biography template — this way, people know the article discusses real, living people. Hope this clears everything up. Happy editing, Clearfrienda 💬 12:12, 7 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

I wanted to let you know, however, that I've proposed an article that you started, Estonian World, for deletion because it meets one or more of our deletion criteria, and I don't think that it is suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. The particular issue can be found in the notice that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you object to the article's deletion, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the issues raised in the deletion notice. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

Talk:Birch bark letters from Siberia

I added this article to country-specific categories, because I dont read all these languages and I hoped countries' wikiprojects members will fill the gaps. Well, it looks like nobody cares about their compatriots under Soviet occupation. :-( - Altenmann >talk 16:28, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wikiproject list

You think articles such as 1933 Baltic Cup‎ are stub? Pelmeen10 (talk) 19:22, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Pelmeen10: please write at: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Estonia § Wikiproject list. Somewhat borderline but rather not stub. AutoWikiBrowswer doesn't say that certainly not a stub (not hasn't autodetecting tag as "Long article with stub tag") Estopedist1 (talk) 19:30, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Baltic competitions shouldn't have only Estonian stub template. Pelmeen10 (talk) 12:35, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Pelmeen10: I added respective templates for Category:Stub-Class Estonia articles, consisting of word "Baltic" and is related to "sport" Estopedist1 (talk) 12:58, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
