Please share Sense of community with others

I appreciate the welcome and your thanking me for linking to the article Sense of community from the Community page. I saw that you listed it as a "featured article" on Portal:Community. As you know, I'm new, so I don't know what other pages would also be good to link from. Please add a link to any other pages you know of that deal with or reference community. Thanks! --DoctorW 07:05, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Thank you DoctorW for the improvments to the article!. You've already done a lot of good work here. I hope you'll opt to join the Community Builders Task Force or at least post advice and suggestions as you get the time. We've got a ways to go and would greatly appreciate your input. Meanwhile, I'll be paying attention to your expert contributions. -- CQ 16:03, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Welcome

Hi, welcome specifically to Wikipedia. I see you are with the sister projects, so I just figured I would say Hi, before you got bombarded with welcome templates with links you probably already know about :) Namely mine. Cheers. Who?¿? 10:19, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

Oops, sorry, I saw your userpage with Metawiki stuff and didn't see the edit summary, so I welcomed you for nothing, well not for nothing, but you know. ;) Who?¿? 10:33, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
Hey, it's quite alright! I welcome welcomes. CQ 15:36, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

CHNM Interview

Hello,

I’m a historian working at the Center for History and New Media. We are researching preer-produced, digital works of history, such as history articles in Wikipedia, as part of a larger project on the history of the free and open source software movement. We’d like to talk to people about their experiences working on Wikipedia. Would you be willing to talk with us about your involvement, either by phone, a/v chat, IM, or email? This could be as lengthy or brief a conversation as you wish.

Thanks for your consideration.

Ken kalbers at gmu dot edu

Sure. Why not? I can be reached at many times on FreenodeIRC. See my user page for details. CQ 14:14, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Environment project

Hello. I would like to welcome you to participate in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment and help sort out articles relating to the environment. Can I also interest you in voting for moving Category:Environmentalism to Category:Environment. See Wikipedia:Categories for_deletion. Alan Liefting 06:21, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Cool! Yes, please count me in. I'm a bit absent these days but I hope to change that, soon. You can see specifically what I'm up to (in the real world) here. CQ 00:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Page delition

I page which is part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Anti-war (of which you are listed as a member) is up for deletion. It is The Left and Opposition to War, you can see its entry at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Left and Opposition to War. It would be helpfull if you could add your opinion.--JK the unwise 12:48, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

Rewrite of Community and peer review of Sense of community

Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Community":
Yes, I agree on the total re-write. The article to date is a rambling essay. (I know - I wrote most of it ;). I'm only an ameteur sociologist with very little college at all, so feel free to refactor the article as you see fit. I think a good solid etymology and definition, as requested earlier would be great. I'm thankful that folks have finally noticed this article. -- CQ 00:38, 18 November 2005 (UTC) CBTF

Thank you for taking in stride the criticisms of the Community article. (Well, all the others were much harsher than I was, but even I would have not used the word "rambling" had I known you were the main author - I really appreciated your supportiveness in relation to the Sense of community article.) I think it's time, though, for taking the article to a higher level. I ran across a good model today (and added to it) at resilience; there are perspectives (one per heading) from materials science, ecology, psychology (mostly what I wrote, but there was already a sentence there), and business. Such a broad topic as "community" needs perspectives from several disciplines.
Also, since I'm pretty new, I don't know much about certain Wikipdia processes, like peer review. I'd like to see the Sense of community article get listed in the official list of featured articles, and I've put a notice on its talk page requesting peer review (I don't even know whether peer review is an absolutely necessary step), but I don't know whether there's anything that can be done to move the process along. Any advice? Would you or others you know care to post a comment at Talk:Sense_of_community? Please (also) do whatever else you know about that you think is appropriate. Thanks. -DoctorW 06:16, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
I amended the Wikipedia:Peer_review#Sense_of_community post and added it to the big list. Maybe some other folks will get envolved.
I've been a communitarian for decades now and The Wikipedia Community has been a fascination of mine since I've been here, which is why I helped start up the Community Builders Task Force. As a service of that Wikiproject, we adopted the Bootcamp for new users using realtime IRC sessions, at times, quite effectively. I don't know if you use IRC, but you can join a huge throng of wikipedians on #wikipedia if you dare and Sj and I (as tractor) hang out pretty much 24/7 in the much quieter #wpbootcamp channel.
Even though META is supposed to be the place for internal Wikipedia Community affairs, we felt some extentions here at the main Wikipedia were in order. There is also WikiProject Wikidemia for conducting academic studies of social phenomena within our ranks. That project has had sporadic activity and was instrumental in the formation of the m:Revision review group and other metaprojects.
Many opportunities exist here for understanding community in general both objectively and subjectively. I'm hoping Portal:Community can become a nice focal point for bringing it all together and my wish is that you would use that particular spot as the table of contents (and context) for linking your efforts. I know the aesthetics are a bit lame compared to other Portal:Portals, but the quality of the articles that link there comes first. Thanks for your envolvement Doc! -- CQ 10:04, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your support

Hi. I just want to thank you very much for supporting my RfA, and also for your kind words. I hope I'll make a good job of being an admin. I'm supposed to be working on an assignment at the moment, and had delayed thanking people, but I'm finding the new rollback button so easy to use that I'm just keeping Wikipedia open on my browser while working on other things, and I thought I'd like to thank at least a few of my supporters while I'm here. Cheers. AnnH (talk) 20:41, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia Anti-war project, push to get a featured article b4 Xmass

February 15, 2003 anti-war protest, an article which is part of the WikiProject Anti-war of which you are listed as a member, has been recently rated A-class by the Version 1.0 Editorial team (see here) This means that it is considered to be of good quality. The Anti-war project has yet to achieve a featured article but with a little pushing I feel we could get this article up to FA standards. To this end I have put the article up for peer review, if you could help make this a brilliant article that would be much appreciated. Please give your comments at Wikipedia:Peer review/February 15, 2003 anti-war protest/archive2 or on the articles talk page. Fingers crossed for a FA before Xmass.--JK the unwise 12:56, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Wikiproject anti-war, Article improvement drive

February 15, 2003 anti-war protest an article from the WikiProject Anti-war, which you are listed as a member of, has been nominated for the Article Improvement Drive (by me  ).

It is an article about a day of much importance both to the history of the anti-war movement and to general discussion of the Iraq war. With a little work from experienced editors it could gain Wikipedia:Featured articles:FA status. If you would like to see it improved please vote for it at Make "February 15, 2003 anti-war protest" the subject of an Article Improvement Drive--JK the unwise 13:11, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

New WikiProject

How can I help (saw your ad-like appeal on the Esperanza talkpage) with your new project? I would love to enagadge in helping others! WikieZach 16:15, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

It's not a new wikiproject. It's an old one. I've just refactored it quite a bit and trying to get it back on track. I figured some Esperanzans might want to help. It would be good to get some discussion and feedback on the newly cleared discussion page at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Community - CQ 16:24, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, CQ/Index, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. Redwolf24 runs the spam to keep members up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of FireFox, Flcelloguy, Titoxd, and Karmafist. The next set of elections will be in February, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Cheers, Sango123 (talk) 18:18, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Hey Maurreen. No problem. You've always been helpful, kind, thoughtful and hard-working. You just keep up what your doing. I like your style! Adminship is overrated, anyway! Thank YOU for all the good work you do on Wikipedia. CQ 20:05, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Recent additions to Community

When I first saw that you had added ecovillages to the "Types" section, I thought oh, oh. But I needn't have worried. What a nice way of tying place, interest and communion together!. I think that we should broaden it to other types of intentional community, because the same can be said for cohousing and other forms.

I would like to get you thoughts on my addition (3rd para) to the "Community Development" section. Does it fit? Is it too detailed? Sunray 18:40, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Nice edits on both counts, Sunray! More here. CQ 20:00, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Community discussion collation for Wikimania

Hello CQ,

I think the community should start talking more frequently and actively about what it wants, where it wants to go from here, and what needs to be done to get there... before Wikimania would be a great way to solidify conversations down to a few key possibilitries, and then to have productive comparative discussions f2f / with supplements via IRC and on-wiki, during the conference. What do you think? There are a couple of weeks to get discussions organized on en:wp and other projects... sj 00:54, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Heck yeah, Sj. Sounds like a job for WP:CBTF! Maybe we can talk on #wikimania soon. I'll try to stay tuned in. • CQ 01:06, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Wikiproject:Community news

Hi Charles, and first of all, thanks for the WikiProject:Community News. I agree with sj that the community needs to start identifying things that it needs to talk about, clarify, research etc. Much of that happens on mailing lists, like foundation-l and wikiresearch-l, but we could be doing more. I'm particularly interested in how this applies to Wikiversity (in which we are proposing to develop learning communities around specific subjects, some of which could relate directly to Wikimedia projects, such as the creation of graphics or identification and critique of academic sources, for example). I've added m:Learning community to the WikiProject page - I fervently hope that we continue to grow as one and that this project could help in some way. Cheers. Cormaggio @ 10:00, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
PS: Will you be at Wikimania?

Very nice to hear from you Cormaggio! I have no idea if I can make it to Boston or not. Sure would like to, but I'm living by the day, if you know what I mean. Thanks for working on the Project page. I moved the 'self-reference' stuff all to the bottom to the Community Builders TaskForce section, so folks will know that the project is mostly for Wikipedia articles. I haven't been over to meta in a while, but I'll get on over there and look around. In fact, If there's enough interest, maybe I'll make a m:CBTF page. CQ 10:22, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
Oh, I'm definitely still around - just more active on Meta, IRC, and mailing lists really, with the occasional flick around my WP watchlist :-). Well, If you get to Wikimania, I'll be there (I can't exactly plan a trans-Atlantic flight a day in advance!), so it'd be great to catch up. Even if youi can't, there'll be a good remote participation - this page should have details, pretty scant at the moment, but check back, especially around those dates! WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America Newsletter - July '06

The Indigenous Peoples of North America Portal has been established, as a starting point for those wishing to learn more about the subject, with information and links on a wide variety of issues. It also contains news regarding the continent's various tribes and nations. It's a graphically pleasing site, and everyone is encouraged to check it out.
The project's home page has a new design, featuring tabbed subpages on participants, templates, articles, categories, and the to do list.
The Article Classification lists have been moved to their own subpage due to size. This is a sign of progress in the ongoing work of this project.
The project's talk page template has been updated, along with the classification system, to include the assessment on the talk pages of the articles that have been classified and assessed.
Balance

As the Project reaches its first six months of activity, the great effort all of you have invested in it has turned the vast information available on Indigenous North American topics from a deorganized cumulous into an excellent and easy to consult database. Although much work is still in order, few WikiProjects are able to obtain the amazing results we are proud to show today. To all of you, thank you and congratulations!
The assessment of articles within the scope of the project is still an ongoing process. We need people to help in this who are not contributors to the articles they are assessing. Also, there is the ongoing need for identifying and cataloguing articles that fall within the scope of this project. As of today, nearly 1,500 have been identified within the Project's scope.

More on "Community"

As you know, I've been adding citations to the article. However, there are several sections to go. If you have any leads (thoughts) on references for any of the sections you worked on, grateful, I would be. Sunray 19:40, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Convinced, I am, that the works of McMillan & Chavis represent the most comprehensive and well-accepted thoughts in the field, Community to date. It seems that all of the source articles and materials that they have provided are in the hands of those who aspire to financial gain rather than the good of society and the Human community. This compromise is very unfortunatte in terms of community itself, and I really do not know how to remedy the situation without opening a dialog with Mr. (or Ms) Mc Millan and/or Mr/Ms Chavis themselves. That's about all I can say, at this time, but I shall consider the matter, and comment later in another place. amen. • CQ 00:15, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Community

Ah, rum. Here I thought wow, somebody finally recognizes my unique brilliance! Oh well... I don't think that two makes a community either, but I've been meaning to sign up. I've been involved with communities of various kinds for many years. Community is an ephemeral thing, really. It is the oxygen we breathe and most of us don't stop to think about it. I guess that's why there isn't a stampede. It is like the way that people avoid talking about process. But let's see, Michigan = community of place. The Beatles = community of interest. Hummm.... something topical. Well there is interest in intentional communities of all kinds... and, of course, ecovillages. So maybe that is an angle to begin with... Anyway, I'm in. Sunray 07:44, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Now you're talkin' Sunray! :) Two heads are better than one. I think once Sj and the others see progress on Community articles by quality, they may rejoin the effort. I'm heading over to Virtual community to start shaking things up over there. It's an attractive topic and the article is nearly as big a mess as community was. Hopefully I can recruit a few members from over there.
Now that the tools are in place, we can approach the list as a series based upon importance and public interest. Feel free to drop the {{WikiProject Community}} tag on as many articles as you like. Do you know of a tool that tracks "hit counts" for wikipedia articles? I suppose talk page activity is a pretty good indicator. It would be nice to have a tool that can quantify that.
Talk:Virtual community has a {{onlinesource}} tag on it, so I think it's a good next focus. I'm threatening to bump that article down to 'stub-class' and stick a {{rewrite}} tag on it. Maybe that will furrow a few brows. I'm also thinking of bumping Community up to A-class but i would like to find another article that can get quickly to B-class. (Take a look at Vital articles) Any ideas? • CQ 09:49, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
P.S. I meant the brilliance comment :)
The brilliance comment certainly got my attention. Seems to me that the next step is knowing what the individual's unique brilliance is, hence you begin to get at motivation. Positive feedback would then reinforce that motivation. I'm learning to watch not only what people contribute to, but how they contibute. Sometime, you might tell me what it was you saw that made you say that.
There should be lots of action on "Virtual community" and related pages. The trick will be distinguishing the serious contributers from the drive bys. Wikipedians are browsers and grazers; they keep moving through those links; watchlists grow and grow — all of which add up to a short attention span. Some things I've noticed about effective projects:
  1. They have good project tools to draw people in (e.g. COTF).
  2. A menu of tasks that is active
  3. Reminders: "You voted for this topic, it is now COTF."
  4. A challenge: "We want to produce 100 FAs and 1,000 GAs by September 15." (Well, actually that wouldn't work, because, while it is challenging, it is not achievable).
  5. Standards. Once people cottoned onto the GA idea, it became a way to guage success.
  6. A core group to drive it.
  7. A nice tag to put on your user page (status).
WP:1 has all of these features and is driven forward by a dynamic duo Walkerma and Maurreen. They manage to rope me into working on articles in my areas of interest ("you voted for Community for collaboration of the fortnight, guess what..."). So my involvement with this project tends to be a lot stronger than the other projects I participate in. Sunray 15:52, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject intelligent design

CQ, re the infobox -- what was wrong with it? Note that I'm not asking this in a whiney or confrontational tone, I'd just like to know why it didn't work so I don't repeat the mistake! Thanks. :) •Jim62sch• 11:28, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Oh, sorry if my edit summary wasn't clear, Jim62sch. The infobox is fine. I just changed the link on the project page from {{Infobox Intelligent design }} to {{Intelligent Design}}. When I wrote "this one works" i was referring to the link. See what I mean? CQ 11:38, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Oh, OK, thanks. Had me worried there, though. But, it's a good reminder to check the links -- I forget to do that at times. •Jim62sch• 23:42, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

The purpose of "quality" ratings of community articles

What is the purpose of "quality" ratings of community articles? Would "development" (level) be more accurate? I noticed that you just reduced the rating of Sense of community to "stub" from "start" (although you once referred to its quality as "featured article"). Of course I may be biased because I wrote the article, but I believe it is of higher quality than other articles I have seen, even some that have been officially recognized as "featured articles" (i.e., Autism), and that the narrowness of its scope will be solved by renaming it (e.g., "Psychological sense of community" and later "Theory of psychological sense of community" and still later "McMillan and Chavis's theory of psychological sense of community") if and when enough articles are written to warrant those moves. -DoctorW 17:53, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

I merely changed it's position in a "queue" that acts as a sort of "buffer zone" for articles to be included in the print CD/DVD version of Wikipedia, scheduled to be released in September (or so). See Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology#Tools, Wikipedia:WikiProject Community and WP:1 (Wikipedia:Version 1.0) and for details. Thanks for your question. Your writing is excellent. • CQ 18:58, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm concerned about this too. Rating the "Sense of community" article "stub" is waaaay off, IMO. Also, CQ, did you know that the rule is not to rate articles that you have contributed to (e.g. "Community")? Sunray 20:51, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Templates and tags

CQ, you have been putting "Wiki Project Community" and "WikiProject Sociology" template boxes on various articles and "Community" tags on articles. From my perspective, when you put those boxes on an article it looks like you are trying to colonize articles that are not properly sub-classes of "Community" (e.g. "Cultural anthropology;" "Community psychology"). Could we have some discussion on this before you continue down this path? Sunray 20:55, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

My humble apologies. No. I wasn't really aware of that rule. I'm trying to build the context of community, so I was using {{Community}} and {{WikiProject Community}} to pull some ideas, articles, wikiprojects and community together. That's all. I got in trouble all over the place today. I didn't mean any harm. See Communitas!CQ 21:10, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Could you respond to my questions about the "Community" tag at Talk:Community? It has merit, IMO, (not everywhere, I hasten to add), if it were pared down and rationalized a bit more carefully.
Your tarnished friend, Sunray 21:15, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Be right there. • CQ 21:18, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

To clarify: I think that both the template and the Nav box have merit but with some qualifications:

  1. The template and box indicate a hierarchical relationship. For example, the box on an article suggests that that article is a sub-set of the set "Community." Thus, there can be little doubt that "Commuity development" merits a template and box. Cultural anthropology (an academic discipline quite separate and much broader than the study of community), on the other hand, does not. "Community psychology" might merit the template/box, but we should ask people in that field whether they agree.
  2. The box still needs some work. It is confusing to me as it is (and I'm in the field).
  3. We should avoid shotgunning these things around — build on quality, IMO.

Just some initial thoughts. Sunray 21:33, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

List of community topics

Thanks, Sunray for editing the list. CQ 03:29, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

TaskForce

Hi CQ - I added my name to the TaskForce, as I have a little bit of experience fiddling with tables... but I'm not 100% clear on what the taskforce is doing exactly, or how you were thinking of using the table. Perhaps you could give some examples on the WikiProject page, and fill in at least 2 or 3 cells, so we get an idea? Thanks.

Also, re Context of community:

  • Is this a standard term in sociology? If so, it needs to be clarified, with suitable references. I don't mean to be too demanding, but unless there is some kind of link, in English (internal and/or external) it's hard to know what it's about, and whether it's even a suitable topic for an article.
  • Is this term translated from German? If so, it might be worth asking whether there is another phrase which is commonly used in English for the same concept.
  • I suggested on the talk page that you move it to you own userspace (User:CQ/Context of community) until the questions about it are resolved, and it is at least suitable for a stub. You could link to it from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Community and ask for input.
  • Standard practice is not to add headings if there is no text below them yet - so it's best to add text, or remove the headings.

That's all for now... --Singkong2005 talk 12:22, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi Singkong2005, thanks for joining the TaskForce. The priority is currently on the top level articles: community, {{Community}}, list of community topics and Portal:Community. Context of community was going to be a way to draw anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, etc. together and down into less academic and more human terms for lay people and a more general readership. CQ 14:06, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Singkong2005. I wonder whether a "Context of community" article is needed. Perhaps you might consider his advice. As to drawing anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy (philosophy?) together. I don't think that people want to draw those disciplines together. They have very different ways of looking at community and like it that way. These different perspectives should be reflected in the main article. Sunray 21:53, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
I moved context of community to User:CQ/Context of community last night and changed the redirect to point to context. You may have to purge your browser cashe to see the change. I'm going to back out some other things too, like removing {{Community}} from all pages except WikiProject Community till more folks join the project and a viable strategy for moving forward is developed. My focus is working on the List of community topics. Thanks for the direction guys. I do appreciate it. • CQ 00:22, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
I've removed the WikiProject Community template from Talk: Cultural anthropology per the discussion there. Note that Slrubenstein has suggested that you could put a template on Community studies. This may be the first time someone has asked you to put the template on an article! Progress? Sunray 19:38, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi CQ from KY, I'm ERM from PA

Hello Charley,

I'm Eric, and I live in a small rural community, alongside the Amish community, behind the mountains above Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

I'm a new login to the Wikimedia Foundation world, but I'm an old electronics geek, apparently near your age. I've just developed an interest in learning more about you from reading everything at Wikimedia:Meta:Communitas and Incubator:Communitas! (etc.), so here I am trying to find a friend.

  • FYI
    • I found a probable typo, so I'm just going to point it out to you here first, rather than fixing it for you myself.

I hope that we can communicate with each other, so I'd like you to first take a few minutes to read something, while thinking about all of your good community development ideas. Please take a quick peek from a Systems engineering perspective at systemics and cybernetics, and then please start learning something about me. No, I'm not trying to create The Borg (Star Trek), see Criticism of Microsoft for that.:) Thanks. --Ermeyers 08:38, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for dropping by, Eric. Interactivity and Interaction are something to look at too. I'm starting to contribute some at perl.wikia.com, but I don't know how much I'll be able to help. I'm quite an ameteur at perl. Do you use IRC? I hang out at #wikiproject and other channels (list) as tractor or yeoman. CQ 17:35, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
I know that we are very much close to the same wavelength. I've still got some assimilating and learning to do in the currently established Wikimedia collective collaboration. You can feel very free to do whatever you want to do in your new Wikia:Perl home, and I really need your very useful leadership there. As you know this Communitas and Wikicommunity stuff is much bigger than us individually, and it just needs to be done correctly, by all of us thinking outside of the box, just like our Founding Fathers who created our great country had to do to get to their climactic moment of July 4, 1776, and so on. We need to fight the good fight, we need to run the race, and we need to keep the faith to see it through to fruition, just like Wikiversity is currently doing now.
A question and a few points:
--Ermeyers 22:44, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for signing your post. Hehe I knew it was you. I see you got bitten a couple of times already. Gotta see WP:NPOV for what's "encyclopedic". Don't be discouraged! I still get bit a lot. CQ 22:55, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject participant lists

I am reluctant to add my name to additional WikiProject participant lists because I find that I do not have time to participate as much as I would like in the WikiProjects that my name is already on. I did add Wikipedia:WikiProject Community to my list of WikiProjects that I support. --JWSchmidt 02:36, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I noticed that and appreciate it. Keep in mind that we're going to be coming up with some tools that Wikiversity might can use as far as nav aids and things to topical areas on 'pedia, so lets keep in touch. Thanks again for your comments at meta-communitas. Would you like for me to remove your section from the page? You're still free to post there, whether you join the project or not. CQ 04:03, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I've been thinking some about the kinds of links that will be needed between Wikiversity and other WikiMedia projects. I guess we should start trying to come up with an icon for Wikiversity. I was not sure about what to do with "my section"....if what I added is out of place, feel free to edit/move it. --JWSchmidt 05:06, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

"Editorial staff lead" - that title sounds like it implies both:
   1) work
   and
   2) a non-wiki-like concentration of responsibility.
I'm not generally opposed to work, but I tend to become a poor worker when I have to do a job in the absense of a job description. I support the idea of a place where people can discuss wiki communities. Just as some people are color blind, I may be "community blind". I am constantly surprised and amazed by my observations of how wiki communities function....and in some cases, sadly, fail to function. I seem stuck in this place: wishing that someone will come along soon and explain it all to me. While I wait I can sometimes try to function as a cheerleader or a gadfly.--JWSchmidt 21:14, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

I know what a cheerleader is, but I had to look up Gadfly (social). Communitas is a 'mover-shaker' meme and is likely to upset a few. As far as it being "work" though, for any one person, that is not the intent. I put you, Cormaggio, myself and Sj into "positions" that are typical of professional and semi-professional Academic publishing organizationsNOT typicle of Wiki[m|p]edia! You got "Editorial staff lead" simply because you were the next in line after Cormaggio to show interest. It's that simple. Communitas! is being designed to prevent things like discomfort or confusion, but promote things like civility, efficiency and prioritas (prioritized work). See exampleCQ 22:38, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Community Nav box

You put that @#!*&#! box back on the Community article and the same box on every other page with the word "community" in it. In your edit summary you ask us to "indulge" you. I find that difficult when you have addressed none of the concerns I raised about it. To re-state a few of these concerns: It is too long, contains (some) links that are not very informative, is not well positioned in the "Community" article, contains links that are a somewhat obscure subset of community (e.g. Ecovillage, which is a subset of Intentional community) and is not organized hierarchically. I'm curious: On the one hand you seem enamored of community; on the other, you tend to function as a one man band. If this is overly harsh, I apologize. I'm somewhat frustrated at our seeming inability to understand one another. The tarnished Sunray 08:03, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

I think I remember begging you to take a look at WikiProject Community. I'm not so good at being part of a community, at least not an online one. I'm hoping to get better. The "@#!*&#! box" is gone from the community article and will soon be gone from all the other pages, but my talk page still carries your harsh critisism. I've asked repetedly for some help and advice in adding to and classifying the List of community topics, which you did on three occaisions relating to ecovillages and cohousing and which I thanked you for, above.
I am not a lone ranger or one-man band, as you say. I try to do the right thing and focus my efforts toward the will of the consensus, which is why I got involved in the WP:1 project. I am a hard worker and of reasonable intelligence, but without feedback, it is difficult to know what people think. This was a bit more feedback than I needed, but thanks for caring about the quality of the article. I care about it too. My efforts will be going toward compiling references and studying the subject. I will refrain from edits in the main namespace after I sweep the navbox from sight. It will be refactored in place at Template:Community. The embarrassed CQ 11:38, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
OK. I retract nearly all of that. I just now discovered that you had joined the TaskForce. I had overlooked it. I think I just had too many irons in the fire. I shall slow down and concentrate on Community studies, (literally) and focus on gathering and reading source articles. I've started a page at meta about computer-mediated communication and Discourse analysis (ironic, eh?) about the much-cited m:Connections: New Ways of Working in the Networked Organization by Lee Sproull and Sara Kiesler.
You may be right about too many irons. I can tell you how it strikes me. I get interested in something related to the project and try to work on it, but feel rather lonely in that my comments don't seem to go anywhere. It is not that you don't respond, you do. However, so far, there hasn't been much collaboration, apart from the "Community" article. Sunray 16:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Sproull, L., & Kiesler, S. (1991). Connections: New Ways of Working in the Networked Organization. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press.

We have some discussion going on 'up' there at m:Communitas. CQ 13:56, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

I doubt that I can do much with Communitas right now. I have too much else on the go. One comment I will make, however, is that Wikians seems like far to large and distributed a population to be able to do much with it (think Community of interest. On the other hand, there may be wiki group interested in community specifically that could be targetted. Sunray 16:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
The Nav box is a brilliant idea. IMHO. However, the implementation of it could have been more collaborative. Two things strike me about it: 1) The content needs work (my thoughts are summarized above), and 2) the process by which it appeared on the article might have been more consultative. One possibility would be to put a link on the "Community" talk page and ask folks if they would like to have some input on the design and placement of such a box on the articles related to community.
Would it be possible to work collaboratively on the Nav box? I have some ideas on how to refine the content (perhaps others do too) and there could be some discussion about that and its placement on articles. Sunray 16:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes I just added a comment to the effect that Wikians are pretty much on their own. My focus is of course on Wikipedia, Wiktionary and traslation tools for building international community. That's Meta's central function.
Thank's for the reprimand about the NavBox. It was an experiment as I said, I am just now learning about transclusion and stuff. There are many more folks here that are more qualified to code tables. It would be great to work collaboratively. Maybe it should be one of those horizontal ones that go at the bottom like on Social sciences. I was just getting off on the pretty colors and how cool it works ;) Plus I have some ideas about learning objects that include sound and animation. My 'specialty' is aesthetics. I play the piano, also.
I think the collaboration part should happen at WikiProject Community, as that's what Wikiprojects are for - pulling articles together (colonizing?) that share a classification. Until the classification is defined, how can you do that? That's why I was focused on that blasted list. You seem to be good at taxonomy and classification. I got the list fairly fat, maybe too fat. but the "reference sheets" or what ever need to be somewhere else, maybe. Either at Meta or the WikiProject. I have no idea what to do next.
Well I'm going on the road for a few days. Thanks for your honesty and openness. No idea when I'll be back. I'm speant. Maybe not till Monday. Later! CQ 17:08, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
A short wiki break never hurt anyone. My comments were very direct (even harsh) and I appreciate the civility and good humor with which you handled them (most of the time). I have much to learn about community. Via con Dios, Charley Sunray 17:29, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Community builder

Hey CQ, I think that Community builder should be moved to Community builder (software), and Community builder should have a disambiguation page pointing to Community builder (software) and Community building. --Eric R. Meyers (Ermeyers) (talk) 11:08, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject United States

Hi, and thanks for being interested and supporting the Wikiproject US. You're right the project for US places could be a "child" project. There could actually be a couple of child projects as there are many, many articles relating to life and everything else in the US. I think it will be very beneficiary to have a parent project for all those US related articles. Thank you. Regards, Signaturebrendel 17:19, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Absolutely no problem, gerdbrendel! I was hoping someone (beside Aude and me) would take some initiative on WP:USA. I've made a proposal for a new Template:Wikiproject at m:Wikiproject group. Please have a look if you have time. Wikipedia:WikiProject United States might be an excellent pilot project for its developmnet and implementation. Just a thought. CQ 18:02, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Project tag

Re:

: Eye catching, indeed! However, if you look at other project tags, note that most of them are fairly serious looking. "Loves community" is a bit strong for me. There, call a spade a shovel, I always say. Sunray 23:30, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Love of community

To elaborate: I wonder how many people could truly say that they "love community." I took applied social science courses in community development in my undergraduate days. Since then, I've always been interested in community and for the past fifteen years have worked in various aspects of community building. So do I love community? Well, not exactly. I value it; lament its loss; strive to build it, and so forth. But to say I love it would be like saying that I love oxygen. Looked at in another way, I would think that we would want people working on this project who are curious about community, want to know more, want to lend their skills (perhaps skills unrelated to community, such as editing skills)... In short, we want people, like you, who love community and we want people who don't know whether they love community; perhaps we even want the odd curmudgeon who despises those who get all warm and fuzzy over community! Sunray 20:23, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Ah ha! This user values community. I like the ring of it! Thanks! Can ya live with that?
I lived in a commune in Saint Louis called the "Whole Wheat House". We were called "wheat flakes" and ran a whole foods distribution network and the "Whole Wheat Grocery Store" at the Soulard Farmer's Market in StL. We were all about "warm and fuzzy" - read Ram Dass and Findhorn stuff. I also spent a couple of weeks at The Farm as a field worker. It was all very kewl. I miss it.
Lately, I'm spending a bit of time at The Ecovillage Wiki and working on plans to form a couple of ecovillages in Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky. I noticed on your user page that you can relate to that. (You've heard of O.U.R. Ecovillage in BC, I presume?)
Speaking of editing skills, I just found User:John_D._Croft (co-founder of the Gaia Foundation and credentialed community builder) who has become quite the Wikipedia editor since January, in my opinion . I've found some interesting stuff just by following his contribs.
Thanks for your feedback ( &-) and support Sunray. I value it tremendously. CQ 22:34, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Commune? There was an idea of the time! Now it is almost a bad word. But not for me. I... cough... lived in one too. That wiki you mention looks promising (I say wiki since Wikia is an organization, I believe; wikis are wikis, though). Is it much used? Yeah, I know the folks at O.U.R.
I noticed John's additions to the Community article. They were well-done, I thought. Some of it repeats stuff already in the article, but I would rather encourage a good new editor than otherwise. Sunray 07:28, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
CQ loves community... Sunray values community... Joe Curmudgeon hates community... humm, a personalizable button. Or we could find something that does it for everyone. Naw. Impossible. Wait, the next thing in buttons! Must be dreaming. Sunray 07:38, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Needed-Class

Since the "Needed-Class" rating isn't actually meant to be used (I've brought up the issue of removing it from the scale entirely, as it only seems to cause confusion), can we delete Category:Needed-Class military history articles? Thanks! Kirill Lokshin 18:10, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Sure. I brought it up again at Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Using the bot#Needed-Class articles just for the heck of it. CQ 18:17, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. For what it's worth, I vaguely recall that actually using {{Needed-Class}} has been brought up before, but the general feeling was that just using hand-created lists would be easier than trying to push through a change to the deletion criteria. Kirill Lokshin 18:23, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

On a related subject, I just created the Battle of Baton Rouge (1862), but don't know whether I should remove it from the MH/ACW taskforce list of needed articles. Can you help? Thanks Sdsouza 20:31, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Please feel free to remove things from the list once they get created. Somebody should probably run through some of the related topic lists and pick out some more articles we still need, to keep the list from running empty. Kirill Lokshin 20:54, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Done, thanks. I am missing an image .. if someone can find an appropriate one. Sdsouza 21:27, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I was very proud of it when it was first written, but it was immediately reverted by a familiar reverter. I'm especially proud of the final paragraph, but put too many red flag statements where thay could cause problems. It looks a little long in its current home. I'm proud to contribute here. --Fix Bayonets! 13:08, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I think I've made proper hash of the ACW portal you setup

Thank you for letting me screw up on my own. I misunderstood basic "selected" mechanics, so my fiddling can just be deleted, but I have made many poor choices, I'm wondering if I shouldn't just revert to your orginal version then apply the newer color styling. The big issue is that because Topics list is (and must be) enormous, the portal must be three page scrolls long at minimum. I'm also not understanding archiving in the box footer. Could you mentor me a bit? BusterD 15:02, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't really know that much about how it all works either. I built it from the instructions at Wikipedia:Portal/Instructions. There is some discussion also at Portal talk:Box-header and some folks there that seem to know a bit about it. The "selected" part is to make it easier to change things from time to time and archive and queue up past and future selections. The Portal:United States folks have gotten pretty good at this. User:AudeVivere might can help some. Anyway, thanks for helping with Portal:American Civil War. We can talk some more about improving and maintaining it at Portal talk:American Civil War. Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.
